Won't restart after long drive

Hi
My M3 smg developed problem won't always restart after a journey.
When I try to restart the brake pedal goes solid, and its only after I have moved the gear lever back , 0,1,2 etc and turned ignition on and off a few times. The brake pedal then softens and the car restarts.
Can anyone help
