1984 533i brake lights not working

I just bought a 1984 533i. I am new to BMW's. The brake lights will not light up. I checked continuity in the fuse, light bulbs, and even the bulb holder. Am i overlooking something simple that I just don't know about. Please help.

I've had electrical contact problems from corrosion where the bulb holders go into the tailight assembly. Also corrosion in the bulb holders themselves. You can try cleaning up the contact areas or even replacing the holders, they're not expensive.

If nothing else works, check your brake light switch on top of the pedals box. Also, make sure your light bulbs have a silver base not a brass colored base as these are known to create problems in our cars.

pedals box

Where exactly is the pedals box? I thought about some switch connected to the brake pedal, but could not find it.

Brake light switch

I found the brake light switch in the pedals box. I put my meter on it and had no continuity with the switch in both positions. It is bad right?
Would it be a bad idea to use a wire to make the connections and bypass the switch to confirm?

You could connect the wires to test it but if you have no continuity in both positions you just confirmed its bad. Replace it and pat yourself in the back!
