E32 dashboard

Hi, Last week the fuel gauge, temp gauge economy indicator and mileage indicator, suddenly stopped displaying. Checked some forums and it was suggested one of maybe 3 caps had expired. I've had these changed, although the originals appeared to the eye to be OK, but still no information is displayed. BMW quote $2000 for a new board - but is it the problem ?

Any ideas appreciated.

You could try finding a used cluster to test with. If it works I believe that the data is contained in a swappable plug on the back of the cluster.
