Tow hitch for 2011 X3

SRQBUZ will you post pictures of your hitch please? It sounds as if it is electronic and if so can you get a regular (non-electric) as well? Did you order this yourself directly from Execuhitch or did your dealer? Did they have to cut out your rear bumper? Do you know the tow rating (pounds)? BMW originally quoted 3500 when they had a supposed hitch. Thanks for posting your info for us!

I tried to attach a couple of pictures but I don't know if it worked. Take a look at this youtube posted by Execuhitch (). It's a good video that shows everything.

I spoke with the folks at Execuhitch and then hooked my dealer into Ben (their technical guy) to answer their questions. I bought the unit directly from Execuhitch and had it shipped directly to my dealer once they understood how it worked and agreed to do the install. I am sure I paid more for the dealer to install it, but I felt better sicne they know the car and the electronics. Their big concern was splicing into the various wires and were afraid it would cause fault signals. It all worked out fine and there were no issues after they installed it. I got the electric version and am pleased with it. There is a manual version available also. There are no cut outs and you will see in the video that once you take the ball mount out, you can't see any modification. Feel free to call me if you have questions. (941) 371-8622

I just installed this Execuhitch on Friday. Install was pretty straight forward but after only using it once to tow my boat this weekend, the hitch will not drop out of the bracket. (electric model) I get the 3 beeps and I hear the latch retract but it will not come out. I even tapped it lightly with a hammer but no go. It does loosen up a bit but it feels as if the latch is not quite retracted all the way and catching.

I really hope I do not need to remove this thing and send it back after all this.

Will have to call them tomorrow and see what they say.

Sledgehammers are wonderful tools. Along with duct tape I suppose.

I am curious, did you need to cut any metal or plastic parts of the rear bumper assembly?

I assume you at least have to remove the rear bumper cover, correct?

I test drove a 2011 X3 28i over the weekend and loved it. I was all ready to order one and didn't because of the lack of 2 inch trailer hitch receiver!

The dealer told me September; but I have my doubts now that I have found this thread.

Why is it taking so long to have the hitch available? Are they waiting for 2012 models?

I'd buy the car today if I knew for sure that a 2 inch hitch receiver was coming.

ajaxdude, I am in the exact same boat -- I test drove the 28 and 35 several weeks ago, checkbook in hand. The lack of a hitch was the deal killer -- I just can't go without one, especially during summer and fall months. Seems silly to offer this kind of vehicle with no way to tow.

I can confirm that the latest word from BMW is September, though they had previously promised the hitch in the spring, so even the September date may slip. My guess with the holdup is that it's related to certification, since a hitch does change the crash/bumper characteristics of the vehicle. Hitches that come from an auto manufacturer must be tested, whereas third party hitches do not need to be. It's possible that BMW ran into issues and had to re-design their hitch.

In the meantime, execuhitch is the only third-party hitch available. There is nothing from Draw-Tite, Curt, Hidden Hitch, etc... I expected they would have offered something by now, but maybe they wait for the manufacturer to do the design work and then just copy...

Execuhitch seems the way to go. Can someone please let us know what these things cost for the X3?

I believe it starts around $650 and goes up with options, attachments, etc.

So nobody else makes a hitch for the new X3? I don't care if it is hidden or not, and really don't want to deal with the long-term potential issues of a retractable hitch like Execuhitch, no matter how well built.

Looks nice...Humm, a couple of questions: (1) How much does it cost (is the MSport version more expensive)? (2) Who can install it...any bmw dealer, or do I have to go to a execuhitch recommended garage. Finally, what is the size of the hitch...whould it accommodate standard bike racks? Thanks.

It does seem to be a well built unit but I still need to use a sledge hammer EVERY time I want to remove the ball assembly. They told me it would loosen up but it has not. Kills me to beat something with a sledge hammer that cost $900.

Curt does manufacture quality hitches and i would not talk bad about a quality company. With this hitch it will always be seen where execuhitch will be hidden when not in use. I am concerned though with the modulite wiring harness as it may not offer complete protection in the case of a malfunction in the trailer wiring. The modulite system is basically just a fuse when it comes to protection of your vehicle-if fuse blows in time you are protected of course. The Execuhitch offers complete protection with its own computer which has installed diodes to prevent any feedback to your BMW.

I have not had a chance to call but today I noticed that the warning beeps no longer work. I will have to call on Monday and see what the issue is. Lord knows I do not want to have to pull it apart to get it fixed.

certainly won't be necessary to pull apart and we will be able to resolve over phone. just sounds like motor out of synch and easy reset

So after reading this thread I am left with the question...the X3 will tow how much, and with which ball size???

For me it's very simple: We are looking to buy a X3 35i and I want to be able to tow my Z4 MC to non-local tracks. The MC weighs 3200lbs. With a lightweight trailer I'm looking at just north of 4000lbs. So which specific product should me choice be?
