I need a smg transmission for my 2002 M3? anyone has one for sale?

I need to replace the smg transmission on my 2002 m3. Anyone has one for sale? I need a used one in good working condition.

Sorry, I can't help but I do have a question for you. Considering an 05 M3 for my wife (she's driving a 535 now) but she won't drive a manual car. Do you have to shift the M3's smg or will it auto shift?

The SMG is the most sophisticated transmission. You can drive the car manually or you can let the car shifts by itself. If you drive the car manually, you need to push the shifter to the A position and than you can change gears with the paddle shifters or with the regular shifter. It's like driving the car manually but without a clutch. In order for her to drive the car automatically, she needs to push the regular shifter to the S position. The car will shift by itself, she only has to hit the gaz and brakes. The car will shift by itself and will do the job for her.Remember the smg is not an automatic transmission, the car will shift gear by itself, so it will change from the 1, to the 2nd, third and up to the sixth gear. Let her test drive the car first, she might not like the way the car shifts. If she likes the car, get her a 2005 m3 csl(competition package). It's the best m3 out there, it has a different suspension, and more hp. They are hard to find, make sure you buy one with less than 50k.

Actually you push the lever to S for "manual" operation, and to the A for automatic operation. The letter is on a diagram on the instrument cluster and the S and A change depending on the operation. If it is in S mode, then there is an A to show where to move the lever and vice versa.

A is not a typical auotmatic. It is like riding in a car with a manual tranny driven by someone else. It shifts like a manual, but when it choose to. But "manual" mode is a not a big deal. No clutch pedal, just pull the right paddle to upshift, the left to downshift. The tranny with auto downshift to keep the tranny in a somewhat lower grea for slower speeds.

Thanks guys. Sounds just like the Sport Mode in my 535? Sharp shifts at higher revs and quick downshifts all done automatically.

Not really. Since it has a clutch, the power is cut completely during shifts. And in A1 or A2, the shifts are quite lazy. At A5, they are harder. But the hardness of the shift is also controlled by throttle/brake.

In S5 (where mine stays), I can get a HARD shift (full throttle no lift) or a smooth shift you don't feel (a well timed lift).

In the(2001-2003) m3, the s mode is the automatic mode and the a is the manual. in the 2004-2006, the a mode is automatic and the s is manual. What i mean by automatic is that you don't have to change gears, the car will do it for you.

NO. What confuses people is on the earlier models, they would see an A on the display when the tranny is in S mode. That is because the display shows you the SHIFT PATTERN, which says, if you move the lever to that point, you will put the tranny INTO A mode.

If you are in A mode, the diagram shows an S to tell you if you move the lever that way, you will put the tranny INTO S mode.

But A mode is automatic on all of them. Or actually later ones use D, for Drive IIRC.

That's right. But people see S mode they think that they are driving the car in automatic mode. I was telling dsq that if he put the shifter on s mode, the car will shift gears itself, even though S is the manual tranny.

The SMG2 in automatic mode is barely passable as an automatic. It is better to view the SMG2 as a clutchless MT. The driver decides when to change gears and the SMG simply executes the sequence of clutch in / change gear / clutch out. The main driver intervention during this sequence is lifting off the gas and rev matching.

I really only use auto mode when I am in stop and go driving and enjoying my morning coffee.

Only time mine is in Auto is when I mistakenly put it there.

And I take it out IMMEDIATELY.
