Exclamation Starter replacement

I bought a 2003 525i about three mnths ago and it has 150k+. Passed MD state inspection after new rear rotors and seems to be a great car but I went to leave the other day, the starter locked up. I have looked for literature, diagrams ect and have yet to find anything helpfull. If I'm not mistaken, the starter looks to be beneath the intake manifold. Can anybody please tell me where to begin, what to look for, and any possible shortcuts....

Here is the procedure from TIS for the M54:

http://tis.spaghetticoder.org/s/view.pl?1/06/34/90

I replaced my starter with the engine out, and it's something i'd hate to do from underneath because of the location just below the intake manifold.

It would be a breeze if you removed the intake manifold, but that itself takes a while...

Good luck!

Ok I did a Bluebee = F3 in the very best links for "starter", and the following came up:

(DIY - Starter Motor 6-Cylinder Engine (M52 Motor)

(Starter Location)

What I recommend, is go to the bestlinks and do a control-f search for 'starter'. Then press F3 until you've reviewed all the links (it helps if you have your settings such that the bestlinks is a single page).

I just did it to find:
- Starter motor R&R DIY (1) and location (1)
- Starter replacement
- Starter replacement notes
etc.

That only took about five seconds (by contrast, it took way longer to write this to tell you that).

Then, I'd look in the E39 wiki for starter information; and then the bimmerfest search engine; and then google.

If none of 'that' provided you the DIY you seek, THEN, I'd ask the questions. But that's just me.

Ooops. I hadn't seen this when I had replied prior.

Good work. The entire purpose of the bestlinks is to give good answers, in seconds, to previously asked questions.

Always improving by "Incrementalism", and with all of us pitching in together, combining your new links with the old ones, we get the following keyword-rich sentence for the next person to benefit from the search:

- Where is the E39 starter motor located (1) & a BMW E39 6-Cylinder Engine (M52) starter motor DIY (1) and an E38 740iL starter motor DIY (1) (2).

I don't mean to be argumentative - but if you had (really) searched, you'd have quickly found the cn90 starter motor DIY, I would think:
- Starter Motor for I6 & V8 Procedures Posted in DIY Section!

Since I find it hard to believe you couldn't find anything by searching, I just ran an "E39" "Title" search for "Starter", to instantly find these (among others):
- Starter Replacement Procedure
- starter motor location in e39s?
- Need help- starter replacement instructions
- 2002 530i Starter Replacement
- 528i location of starter
- time to change a starter
- New starter and batt.

- How do I get the starter off?
- HELP! e39 down! starter relay location/part number
- 2001 Bmw 525i, No Start, No Starter Noise, Dead !!!
- Possible starter problem?
- Starter replacement '03 540i
- bad starter ?
- starter?
- 1998 E39 Starter Problem
- M52 starter motor removal, can it be done without removing intake manifold?
- How to install starter?
- where can i find starter relay? (2000 540i)
- Starter cut out and Stop Engine low oil pressure warning?
- Is it my Starter ???
- Starter Issues on 99 540i
- Starter Troubleshooting
- Problems removing starter on 2001 530i
- Failing Starter Symptoms?
- Starter shot?
- Starter???
- Starter Relay Location Please Help
- Starter or Alternator blown???
- Starter - anyone replace theirs?
- HELP! Starter Relay Location on 2000 528i
- replace starter or solenoid
- Starter Relay location - 540 will not crank
- starter problem
- Replacing Starter 1998 540i
etc.

To the OP: Now that we've done your homework for you, what I suggest you do as a payback to the team is to click on those links above (I didn't), and see which ones are helpful for YOUR needs.

Then, to redeem yourself in our eyes, all you need to do is tell us which ones you found most useful for your needs. Then, I'll be glad to add THEM to the bestlinks so that the next person who has the same questions can find those answers instantly.

It's the way we improve things here. We all help find the best references and then we improve that which is missing from them.

Deal?

I LOVE that quote!

Half the time I don't believe the people who say whatever it is they say (and don't supply supporting pics).

Plus, the pics help the NEXT person ... mainly because we're (almost) all not professionals - so - the pics give us courage!

At least they give ME courage to tackle the next job.

So, to the OP ... Take Takechan's advice. Please post pictures of the job so that we can all benefit from your efforts. It's the way it works here.

We all help each other in any way we can (me? I'm the grammar Nazi, for example!).
