New X3 35i on order, no test drive needed

Well, I am joining you X3 owners (or, I should say, my wife is), and it a little convoluted how we got here.

She has had an X5 diesel for 2.5 years. A great vehicle, but she was feeling it was too large, hard to handle in small spaces, had poor visibility, etc. I have an M3 ED on order and had to get a swapalease 328xi 6month lease while waiting for it. She started driving it and now I have been driving the X5 because she now likes the sedan, won't give it back, and wanted a car that drives like a sedan, but we need some utility. We went to see a 328 sportwagon, but she felt it was somewhat lazy. I think she is used to the diesel power. To solve the situation, we decided to order an X3, although we have not even taken it for a test drive. I think it is probably the best compromise between power (which the 328 sportswagon has), the utility (which the sedan lacks), and a more manageable size (which the X5 lacks) out there and I feel confident enough that she will like it that we are getting a loaded one without even test driving it. The last time I bought a car without a test drive was a C32 AMG and I did not make a mistake then. Am I making a mistake now?

I've also bought a car sight unseen and no test drive and it turned out to be a great car. This was due to extremely limited quanties so I really had no choice if I wanted the ride ASAP. With that being said it might not be a bad idea to swing by your dealer and take a test drive assuming they have an X3 in stock. You're obviously already familiar with BMW controls and interfaces so that won't be new to you. Seeing that you are going with the n55 I don't think you will be disapointed in the power department (assuming you're not expecting M3 type power! ;-) )

You won't regret it. The X3 3.5 feels like a silky rocket after driving the X5d, which has a lot of power but feels big and heavy. How much off MSRP did you get and how long until delivery?

Go for a BMW Event: http://www.bmwusa.com/driveforteamusa and get your cert for $1000 off your new car. I did that just yesterday. My car is already on order.

Talking

Your wife will be thrilled. I am. I went from a 328i to an X-3 35i and I would never consider going back. I have also had an x-5 and there is no comparing the 2. The 35i is just plain:rofl fun to drive!

An X5 diesel (in the US) for 2 1/2 years! Wow, she must have gotten the very first one out of Spartanburg. I thought they were only on offer from the 2010MY on. Good luck on your sight unseen purchase. The X3 has a much stiffer ride than the X5.

The stiffer ride will be nice. Come to think about it, we got the X5 sight unseen and worked out well. We got a 2009 in Feb 09, so yes it was one of the first ones. Missed on the eco credit though, so the early bird not always catches its prey.

Sounds like that has worked well for you. Thanks for the clarification on the diesel -- you must have been a pioneer with that one. If you like stiff rides then the you will love the X3 too.

Are you referring to the new, 2011 X3? Even in full sport settings, with Sport Activity Package and Dynamic Handling Package, our new X3 has a very compliant ride- worlds better than our non sport 2006 X3.

Where does it say that you get a $1000 credit on a new car purchase? Will it apply to an X3? I'm about to purchase.

It applies to ANY NEW BMW vehicle, from the email I received with my unique certificate number:

Bruce, thanks. Should have qualified that -- it was the older X3, the new one is supposed to be better. My bad.
