Gbates,
Looks like the adjuster is looking primarily to please his boss and keep the insurance company's cost down. You have a compelling story, graphic photos and good cause for them to "total" vice repair the car. This is worth discussing with an insurance supervisor if the adjuster continues to travel the path of least resistance.
Good luck.

Supposed to hear tomorrow (from the adjuster)...keeping my fingers crossed. Not sure what to expect, but I need an answer to move forward. Whatever the answer, I'll order another car. May wait for the 2012 model. Shouldn't be too long before one can order a 2012.

Glad you are ok and I hope its totaled. I was in a wreck in my e39 and the car was totaled with only the drivers air bag deployed, it was a side impact though.

Update

Had some issues with the tear down of the vehicle to access the mechanical damage, but won't get into that. Today, talked to the body shop where the tear down occurred. They had just completed the tear down and assessment of repairs. They have a rough estimate of $32500 for repairs. Still may be more to add, as I was told. Insurance adjuster didn't have this info yet and has not called. I'm still hoping to have the vehicle totaled. Hopefully I'll know by the end of the week.

This must be extremely frustrating for you. I hope it gets resolved (and totaled) soon.

Thankfully I've never been in this situation, but why would the insurance company total a $70,000 car if it can be fixed for $33,000?

They can total it, solve the owners claim, and then sell the damaged car cheap with a "salvage title" to someone who will repair and drive a "deal".

Least cost solution and least hassle since the repair will never be right and "like new" on a car this expensive!

Had this done on a nice 500SL a few years ago.

Future liability. OP's car has many many many things that need to be replaced. If that doesn't happen correctly, the F10 will not perform in the crash just as well the second time around. They'd be saving themselves a lot of headache by giving OP a fat check and salvaging the car.

OP, can you file for diminished value?

Yes, if the insurance company hesitates to total the car I wii remind them of the diminished value claim. Hopefully, that will be enough to convince them to total. Just a hassle, as I can make no future car plans until I get an answer. This Saturday will be 3 weeks since the accident, to me this is too long for an answer.

Heard today from the body shop. Total to repair damages is over $45000. This does not include an estimated $5000 to replace the main wiring harness. The estimate was being sent to the insurance adjuster. Hope to hear from them tomorrow. With this new estimate, I'm expecting it to be totaled. Hope I'll be ordering a new car soon.

The fact that it's taking so long is insanity. I'd be losing my sh**. But I'm a New Yorker so my patience is that of a gnat.

As WC Field's famous movie line said "The resale value of this car is going to be nil."
