2000 328i Blown Head Gasket

My 2000 E46 328i with 140k miles, blew the head gasket last week.

I was driving on highway and I saw the temp gauge rising. I stopped and noticed low coolant. Since I was long way from home, I stopped at the gas station and filled it up with drinking water. Gauge was fine, but after few miles, gauge rose and smoked came out. Basically, It died right there.

I got it towed to a shop and the mechanics confirmed me that there's a code for cranking error and there was water on spark plugs.

I have been maintaining the car properly over the years and always prompt with oil changes and other maintenance.

Is this a common thing with E46 inline 6's? What could have caused this? I had no engine lights or any other symptoms that would hint me.

Currently I am looking in to buying a new engine, since I do not want to move on to another car at this time. The dealer quoted me somewhere around 5k+ for a rebuilt engine and saw a place online for way less. http://www.woodfins.com/PartDetails.aspx?SKU=5001746

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Are you gonna install the engine yourself?
If so and you are pretty good with tools, I say order the one off the website and go for it

I am looking for engines online. Once I find a decent one, I will be going to a local shop. I wonder if it's a direct swap or any ECU, coding work has to be done with the computer?

Mein Auto:
i swapped an e36 motor into an e30 and had to swap over ecu etc. but if the same motor/model# swap over i would think not but never know.gl

Sometimes it 'can' be repaired:

I don't know either, but, the OP may find hints in this similar thread for the E39:
