Vibration in 2011 X3 35i

Hoping someone has experienced this (and had it fixed)...

We have a 2011 X3 35i. April 2011 production. SAV Package, Premium Package, Cold Weather and Convenience. It has about 5K miles on it now.

About a month ago, we took a road trip to Vermont (we live in CT). While on the trip, we tried the "Auto H" button for the first time. Since then (it may be coincidence) we have noticed a significant vibration that comes and goes. We think it is coming from the rear because we do not feel it in the steering wheel. We can reproduce it during brisk acceleration approaching 80 MPH but it sometimes happens at other times. We brought it to the dealer and they balanced the back tires but agreed that it did not fix the problem. They claimed they drove 3 other X3s on their lot and that they all do it (I don't really believe this because I don't think they had the time between reproducing the issue and calling me). I explained that just because other cars do it does not make it "normal" and asked how they expect to proceed. They told me that they are "between reps" and as soon as a new rep is assigned they would pursue the matter.

Has anyone else noticed this or had a similar experience??? We will likely try a different dealer after waiting a bit.

Thanks in advance...

I only have 1,200 miles on my 35i, but it has not done this. My loaner 35i I had for 2 months did not do it either and we drove from Michigan to Pittsburgh with it often driving at 80mph.

Try a different dealer, just do not tell them you have been to a dealer with that before. Get a mechanic on-board and show him the problem.

hello, what problems did you have that required a loaner for such a long time? Thanks for the info. I just ordered a 35i.

No problems with the vehicle. The dealer screwed up my order for my original 35i and left off the premium sound. They re-ordered me another one and while I waited for it to be built, they let me keep the incorrect spec. as a loaner.

That is the standard BS answer for everything. Next will be: "It must be how you drive it".

They said that when I had the whole AT issue and then when I had the ticking lifters.

You aint the only one brother, ever since I tried my Auto Hold botton I been experiencing similiar sounds, it sounds like a tin can rattling from the rear. In the beginning I thought it had something to do with the electrical steering cuz I felt some kickbacks while driving straight, I revved it to 3k RPM to make sure it wasnt the road surface that's when I noticed the sound. Already made another appointment with my dealer and this will be the 3rd time going back... sigh...

dand, if the first dealer made out a service order on the complaint it will be in the system and the new dealer will know that the problem was raised. It is better to be upfront and tell the new SM that you had taken it in but were not satisfied with the experience.

hi again,

was the 35i everything you expected it to be? How is the actual mileage? Close to the brochure rating? Thanks.

Aside from this issue, we love the car. We are averaging 21 MPG.

Is this vibration mostly at 75-80 MPH? If so, I am experiencing the same thing. Here is my thread on the other site regarding this issue.

http://x3.xbimmers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=570624

My issue is compounded by the fact that I have changed the tires, but after multiple re-balances the vibration is still there. It isn't in the steering wheel, it is in the seat and body of the vehicle, but it isn't consistent. Sometimes it goes away completely at that same speed. Someone in the other thread said that two of his rims were out of round and he replaced them and it fixed the problem. I am not sure what the AUTO H would do to cause such an issue.

UJ is correct. I was once "scolded" by my dealer for taking it to another to have my 30k check up done. My response was: "If your new electronic scheduling system worked or you answered your phones I would not have had to." They now take my calls direct and have acknowledged the system is flawed.

I offered to rewrite it for them, but alas BMW corporate stepped in and bogged down the process to a crawl.

Moral of the story is they keep great records of your service and sometimes it works for them and sometimes it back fires, er umm work for you
