E82 / E87 / E88 / F20 1 Series (2008 - 2014)
BMWs throw back to the iconic 2002, with a renewed form and function. The smallest car in BMW's line up but still packs a punch. Available in coupe or convertible, powered by a naturaly aspirated inline 6 in the 128 or the turbo twin power inline 6 rocket sled 135.

Engine compression low

Hello. I recently purchased an 84 318i. It's got some problems, but it is running ok with some idle problems. I felt like I should of been getting better gas mileage, so I decided to give it a compression test before I started putting $ into it. The 2nd and the 4th cylinder are hitting around 60 psi. While the 1st and 3rd are around 90 psi. Has anyone had any experience with this? Is it going to need a new engine or maybe some kind of adjustment? Any help would be much appreciated.

You may need a valve adjustment, as I do not think e30's had hydraulic lifters. But regardless, you are in the wrong subforum for this problem. Go to the e30 forum and see if you have better luck with a solution there.

This post is in the wrong forum. Hopefully a moderator will move it.

Yeah the M10 engine has solid lifters. There is a DIY writeup here --> http://www.bmw2002faq.com/content/view/21/33/ It is for the M10 in a 2002 but early 318i should be the same. . .

60psi is very low. Engine is probably worn out. Valve adjustment is certainly worth a try.
