Question Yet another roof failure question

Hi All,

Apologies for starting another thread on convertible roof problems but I have read through nearly 100 messages to see if anyone has experienced what happened to the roof on my 328i convertible (1996) and can't seem to find the answer.

History
One day last week for no obvious reason (at the time) when lowing the top, it's fully automatic, it just stopped and the red light started flashing after about 4 inches of movement.
Okay used the manual to disengage the motors and wound the top back to fully locked using the allen key. Car now safe to drive. However it turned out the battery was flat, and I guessed that was why the top did not work.

So battery sorted car running fine, I now go to follow the excellent instructions on the other threads/pdf's etc.. to fix the roof.

I unlock the roof using the allen key, turning for ages until the roof is relaxed and I can lift the back up.

However here is the problem. The storage bin will not lift it is still locked. I cannot find any where instructions on how to release it. The boot is not open so that should not be causing the issue.

Can anyone help ?

Thanks

Dave.

have you opened the trunk (Boot) and re closed it to make sure it is properly locked? possibly the microswitch in the trunk has failed - it could be tested.

my 1996 328 Conv had semi auto top, and after weeks of trying to track faults I ended up having the control computer rebuilt. if it comes to that I can recommend a place!!!! ( in uk)

I have opened the trunk/boot a few times and made sure it is shut. Do you know where the micro switch is for the boot ?

So after nearly 2 years I found a specialist who is very good value and an expert in sorting malfunctionaing roofs.
His name is Adam and he runs a firm called Cayman Auto Services in Dorking, Surrey. I highly recommend him.

Thanks for bothering to update the thread. Do you know what Adam did to fix it?

Yes aparently there were 2 faults. 1 the wiring to the front motor had become brittle and at least one wire had broken. He replaced the loom. The second was the header motor had seized. Very unusual apparently, normally they need replacing because of the thread being stripped by high power drills used to open the top manually.
