replacement body parts

Does anyone what the wait time is for replacement body parts for my 35i? I was parked at Costco and was the victim of a hit and run in the parking lot. The drivers side rear around the wheel well and the rear bumper are all trashed.

I have no facts, but it is my impression from reading posts made by others is that nothing at all in the way of parts, even known "problem" parts, is stocked in the US. It often seems to take 2-3 weeks to get any part from Germany. It would be a pleasant surprise to discover that I am wrong.

I got rear-ended in March and it took about 2 weeks for the bumper cover to show up and 1 more for the muffler

So sorry you got hit! Took forever for a replacement windshield. Took it in to be replaced and the windshield was broken in the box, but somehow they overnighted a new one overnight.

This part availability problem never ceases to amaze me. After all the cars are assembled right here in the US. You would think that all parts for that process are continuing to be sent over or procured locally in large lots and it would seem easy enough to include extra "high demand" parts for replacement stocking. I guess that would be too easy however and it is better to just stockpile any "repair" parts in Germany (or wherever) and then ship to order when requested. Probably has some sort of "no stockpiling, demand supply chain availability" I guess.

I believe that the BMW NA new car sticker displays aprox 22% of the X3 has US made/produced parts. That is probably the steel stamped at Spartanburg Steel, as there is no steel pressing at the Greer 'factory', more like an assembly plant of German parts in a free trade zone. Probably the part suppliers are just keeping up with the strained X3 production demand of 'just in time manufacturing' that there is no surplus of spare parts here in the States. All speculation on my behalf.
