What do you mean "dimantled"? As in destroyed by being taken apart or being destoyed by being hit?

By a hit.the white cover broken off. The glass was just dangling by the cord. Destroyed.

1. Burning smell likely the Particulate catalyst in its cleaning cycle...posts about this and in the owners manual
2. Insurance? It will be a 'chargeable' claim under your collision policy- unless you can prove another car hit it. Prove, not claim. $600? MY guess. A

Hope you get your mirror replaced and not worry about the burning smell. I work for BMW, and everytime I get a new one - the burning smell usually lasts about a week or two depending on how often you drive it!
Congrats on the ride!

There is a difference between a new car burning off cosmoline in the first few weeks/months, and the normal catalyst regeneration cycle of the diesel....

mx, you might get the mirror replaced under the comprehensive part of your policy dealing with vandalism -- and that is what that was almost certainly if it happened in a parking lot. Takes a lot to knock off a mirror at parking lot speeds, but if someone had a woodie about "expensive foreign cars" well, thats what happens, just like keying. There is also probably a tape in the store security office showing the perp ripping off your mirror too. The problem is getting them to show it to you.

So i Went to the store and they showed me the tapes. they were so fuzzy you couldnt even see past the first three rows of cars. they blamed the bad picture on the fact that no one goes up and cleans the lense and glass cover.
ard, how long does that Particulate catalyst regenerator go for. i was reading in the e90 post that its something like 600-2000 miles. i wasnt to sure what he was talking about. BMWMC, Hey how do you like your 550i. i have been looking to getting one of those. i have been looking at the 2009-2010 models.

BMWMC,
Hey how do you like your 550i. i have been looking to getting one of those. i have been looking at the 2009-2010 models.[/QUOTE] I had a 2010 for a weeks, last year when I swapped with a coworker and enjoyed it. The 2011, i enjoyed it .. nothing but a beast! "All the high-tech" features make it the best. Lots of horsepower and a overall joy to drive...very comfortable yet sporty sedan.

OK the burning smell thing has takin a turn for the worse. On the way home from work. I got bored in traffic and checked the car systems. i checked the tire pressure. When i checked the oil level it came up for a warning telling me that the oil was way to high. so i drove real easy home and when i pulled up the truck smelled so bad. The burning smell was so strong i actually had to step away from the x5. so i took it in to the dealer after letting it cool off for a while. when i got their they all looked so confused. they did not understand what was going on.
So now what do you all think is going on now.

Huh. Weird. I had the 'oil level too high' thing, but that was a sensor and a reprogramming...nothing burning.
Either you have independent issues, or something else is going on. The particulate thing should only be smelly for say a half hour as it does it's cycle. Hmmmm

Wow the one that always helps me out is stumped. well with my expericances with diesels. its either the head ghasket is leaking and the fuel is actually filling into the oil jackets. and or the coolent has made its way to the oil jackets. with that the oil level would raise for no reason. i just loved the look on the service floor manager face when he smelled the smell and looked at the oil level. LOL priceless.

if it is a REAL oil level too high, then there are not too many ways that can happen and not be real bad. (Other than overfilled from the get go.)
Did you check the oil level with the actual DIPSTICK? Mine showed high on the display, but fine on the dipstick, so it was a known 'bad sensor issue'.

The dipstick was over the top also. you are tawking about the one by the intake. I also generally check the oil on the dash daily. just for ****s n giggles. but the oil was filled by bmw correctly and also i did not service it myself. so yea im stuck.
