Road test review - 2012 BMW 528i

ran across this first drive review on Edmund's Inside Line.

http://www.insideline.com/bmw/5-seri...rst-drive.html

The cited new mpg is not a big jump, but still very nice for a high mileage daily driver like me... "The 2012 528i improves on the 2011 model's fuel economy by 1 mpg city and 2 mpg highway and achieves an EPA rating of 23 city/34 highway mpg."

I still have not seen "official" mpg numbers on the EPA or Dept of Energy websites.

Their bottom line opinion... "The 2012 BMW 528i is a car with an unusual breadth of personality, ranging from comfortable econo-sedan to sporting four-door. And this efficient new twin-turbo four allows it to pull off these character switches with conviction. Yet it's not a car of split personality. The satisfying way in which it gels makes it easy to understand why this is the best-selling sedan in its class, worldwide."

I'm right! The auto rags including Roundel who wrongly took that "up to" 15% mileage improvement figure and ran with it in all the wrong ways saying it would get 37 mpg highway were, unfortunately, all wrong.

I was pretty close. I was projecting 24/33 mpg thinking the start stop and only 4-cylindres worth of friction at low speeds would give a bit more than 1 mpg in the city, but instead it came out 23/34 mpg. Still within the range of my prediction. I think I said it would do 33 mpg on the highway, or 34 mpg "tops". So I was right there.

Anyways nice review. Look forward to trying out a 528xi.

If you're particular about the sound and feel and throttle response and overall "drive" and personality of the NA Inline-6, it's still probably going to "ruin" the car for some. The N20 also introduces a host of long-term reliability and maintenance concerns vs the naturally aspirated and port injected N52.
