2006 X3 Sports Package Snow Tires

My girlfriend has a 2006 X3 with Sports Package, and I'd like to get snow tires/wheels for taking up to Tahoe for skiing. The 18" snow tires are expensive and not easy to find in local shops.

Also, from what I've gathered, the 18" wheels aren't the best for putting snow tires on, so it might be more advisable to pick up some cheap 16" or 17" wheels. Can I go as low at 16s safely? If I do so, do I need to stick to the original tire/wheel size, just smaller.

So right now it's 235/50/18 on front and 234/45/18 on back. If I go to 16", it'd be 235/50/16 and 235/45/16?

Thanks, guys.

Kamel, try the forum for the E83 ('04-'10 BMW's) just ahead of this one. Although a lot of folks here had the older ones too, so you might luck out. In any case, I would also ask the tirerack thread here on best of bimmerfest. Gary is very quick to respond.

16" wheels likely won't clear the brakes...

Look for 17" wheels with 235/55-17 winter tires...

For the difference in price between 17" and 18", you'll likely save enough to pay for the wheels... I'd look for stock 17" wheels for sale, used...
