cost of front and rear break pads

I recently bought used bmw 545i and went for servicing they say i have both front and rear break pads to be replaced along with rotor costing me 876 and 785 dollars respectively and i will be charged for labor extra i just don't understand are they so much expensive and why to replace rotor???????

Welcome to BMW ownership my friend. They don't cut your rotors only replace at the dealership and they only use new parts. That may be why. It's not a hard job (to me), but boy do they get paid. After coughing up about $600 on the front axle of my X5 i said never again will i pay for a brake job and haven't since. See if you can find an independent BMW mechanic around you area, it may cost you half that amount.

+1 you can get in touch with your local BMWCCA chapter and they can recommend a good Indy in your town.

I got rotors and pads for close to 500 for the all. Search the forums and you will find many treads on rotors and low dust pads an the Indy's which will do it for 200-250

Are replacing the rotors really important??

I know the I might lose some braking power but I drive like a Grandma so I can careless. I never replaces rotors on my old car, I had close to 200k on them - no problems.

Wow. You even beat this guy who only got about 120K miles on his rotors!

Go with the latest pads craze, cool carbon, supposely BMW put these on 2010 and newer cars to reduce dust to zero but maintain that "german car" braking feel. I've tried many typical pads, you either have no dust but less braking or great braking with dirty wheels in a week.

This is an utter ripoff. It should be closer to 450-500 per axle. You need to shop around.

Buy rotors and pads on-line (RMeuropean dot com, AutohausAZ dot com are good) and replace them yourself or find an independent mechanic.
Take a calipers and measure the thickness of rotors. If the current thickness of the rotors is below the MINIMUM required, then replace the rotors. Otherwise, it's not necessary.

Buy after market rotors,sensors and oem brakes online do some research im not going to just give you the wesite to get them becouse i work hard to find them

I own a '08 535i with sports package plus stage2 intake. Pushing around 330HP 345torque. When I had to do my front brake for the first time they wanted $900.00 at the dealer. I went to http://brakeperformance.com ordered me front and rear sensors, high performance semi-metallic (last better than non metallic when you drive like I do) pads and dimpled and slotted rotors (not drilled, they can crack and warp, dimpled have a life time warranty). Had my local BMW shop install them and I spent about $1100.00 total. That's for front and rear high performance (a very sexy) brake rotors, pads and sensors installed for $200.00 more than OEM for just the front. Just make sure the shop you chose has the computer to reset your maintenance info.

+1 to most of the responses , if I had to pay I'd never buy those dust breathing pads.

Interestingly, a brake pad,with an EE cold/hot friction grade is only marginally better than steel on steel!

In context of determining whether to buy extended maintenance coverage ($2295) for my 2006 550i I asked my BMW dealer for cost to replace brake pads and compared to recommended independent. Given what seems to be high dealer maintenance costs (see below) it could make sense to buy extended maintenance contract (since I have not done my own car maintenance for many years).

First, I was surprised that BMW dealer will only replace rotors and pads (for all my other cars I have only had to replace pads). Dealer "explained" to get excellent stopping BMW uses "soft" rotors and pads so rotors also wear down quickly. Anyhow, cost was $1930 front and $1875 rear to have work done at dealer. Dealer also gave cost for oil change at $215; spark plugs $720; cabin air filter $192; engine air filter $162.

Independent charge for rotors and pads replacement quote was $860 for fronts and "about the same" for rears. He also said sometimes they are able to just replace pads at cost of $330 front and $330 rear (my notes not really clear so it could have been $330 total to replace both front and rear pads only).

It's amazing how much money u save when u do it your self lol

As long as people continue to pay ridiculous amount of money for simple routine stuff, I can't blame dealer.

i also needed rear brakes on my 535i and the dealer quoted me $900. its a good think i can do it myself. i got the OE pads and sensor online for about 125. i tried to cut the rotors but unfortunately they couldn't be saved so i ordered new zimmerman rotors for 85/EA.

lot better than 900

Ebay sell oem pads for cheap and just get centric slotted rotors

In Bluebee posting - Wow! I am amazed at the differences in cost if you shop around. Is it only the cost of the part and does not include the installation? My 525i light just turned on "Check Brake Lining", so this information is helpfull when I meet my local Independent BMW Repair shops.
