2011 328xi - wind whistle on driver side mirror

The rubber band idea isn't bad! It's black, removable and might fit the gap perfectly.

The invisible shield is just like the clear bra I'm using to cover the gap. Mostly invisable, it will work. The window is so quiet now. Love the no whistle

does not look too bad!!

Does anyone know what makes our mirror shape different from Euro ones?

Just got a email from my BMW service that the outside exterior mirror shell that is causing the noise could be replaced. They've just ordered one for me.

Good luck. I'm a bit skeptical...sounds like they're just throwing a part at it, hoping it will go away (or you will)!

In my post, I state how I noticed a whistling "wind" noise when traveling over 35-40 mph with the driver window down.

WTF?!?

No way should this ever happen. EVER.

are you kidding me? I buy a 40k vehicle and it is worse engineered than a damn civic or camry? (Ok i know its not worse engineered completely, but wind noise?)

how the hell do they over look this? I drive with my window down ALL THE TIME when its nice out... NO WAY would I accept this as OK.
I have a 08 328 with the different mirrors and i have no problems - perhaps pick up a pair of older e90 mirrors?

if you notice my (08 328) mirrors are MUCH smaller and more "sleek" in design. The new 2011 328 mirrors are big and bulky - they appear to not even match the car. (not a surprise Euro's get the good mirrors and US owner's are once again screwed!!)

im a little skeptical as well that they are just throwing a new 'same part' at it, but its a step in the right direction. please let us know when they do the work and if its fixed, and different part itself.

This was how I fixed the whistling sound. I had a roll of black insulation tape from the Home Depot, $8 for a big roll, laying around in my garage.

Cut a very thin strip of it, about 2 inches long. Use good care, remove the paper backing, tug it in the gap at the corner of the mirror as shown in the above pictures.

Use one finger to rub on the surface to remove the excess until the strip is very thin and hardly noticeable. Clean any thing that gets on the painted area by rubbing it off gently. Afterwards no one will ever be able to tell you filled the gap with anything.

All you need is a bit of fill in the gap at that corner to eliminate the wind noise.

I think the point is why would it even whistle at all. It's like the BMW wind tunnel guys were wearing ear plugs during the test.

says the guy with a 2007?? really?
if you had late model mirrors you'd know that closing the windows does not stop the issue, you can use all the AC you want. yes its that loud.

Got the new one installed today. No, it does not fix it. Same noise at 70+ mph. At least they tried.

Check out my insulation tape mod above, virtually invisible.

$8 roll of weather stripping, nice work lol gotta love our cars

Hey... it seems like this is still an ongoing issue. I just got my '11 328xi and it had the wind whistle. Is it doing it for both mirrors for you guys, or just the front left mirror?

Anyway, I brought it to the dealer, they test drove it and "removed mirror cover and sealed air gap to mirror with butyl cord." There was some gap in the seal when they took it apart. The noise is completely gone for now, so hopefully thats a permanent and easy fix!

I thought I was crazy for hearing the whistling. Turns out, I'm not. Going to HD or Lowes tomorrow for some insulation tape. Thanks for the tip!
