i am very impressed.......

with my 2011 550xi M sport
drove today in a middle of snow storm in NJ about 100 miles, most on 287, 24 and bunch of local roads in Bergen county NJ
excellent traction, stability, not a bad grip on infamous GY 19" tires
i drove X5 for 4 years and 550xi is as good as SUV, with exception of ground clearance
i hope to go trough this winter which might be very snowy on AS tires, so far so good
Alex

I made the switch from an X5 to a 550iX this year too. Love's it. Dinan chip yours and you'll have a beast!

I've been impressed with my 550xi too, but that's with the overall performance and quality of the car. Unfortunately, it's still October, so I still have my summer tires on the car.

The weather caused us to cancel a planned weekend trip to upstate NY. All wasn't lost though, Mrs Dunderhi decided to make a Lasagna - my favorite.

You will be surprised how well an Xi sedan does in winter even just on A/S tires. I have had mine for 3 years in the DC area and not a problem at all ever.

I too experienced excellent snow performance this weekend in 6" of snow with the AS 19" LS2/AWD combination. Ground clearance can be a problem. otherwise it was comparable to my MDX AWD. It just did what it was supposed to do. No need for winter tires unless lower temperatures severely affect snow performance.

I used the goodyears ls2 18 inch last year on a 5 series 18 inch at sub 10 degree temperatures in snow and they were phenomenal which is why I am going to avoid winter tires for now and see how they do this winter and next year and make decision. So far so good.

when you drive in the snow, do you leave gear selector in D or drop down to a lower gear. Not on highway, but on regluar roads where you would tend to be going slower, say 35-40 mph. Thanks

I never took it out of drive. It's possible that when starting off on a hill you might want to start in second gear, but my brief experience says that's unnecessary.
