E39 (1997 - 2003)

Different scanner. New code

I had been wondering if different parts stores used different scanners. Autozone is less than a 1/8th of a mile from my house so I would just go there to pull codes. So today I decided to drive down the street to Advance auto parts to get a battery price for my wifes car and asked them if they could pull the codes for me.

They did use a different scanner and the little sob popped up a new code for me

P0340 along with the 171 and 174.

I believe I have found the culprit to the 171/174 issue. The vacuum jet pump behind the motor.

As for the CPS, Could this likely be the intermitent power and torque loss I am experiencing?

You have two CPSs; the right bank CPS is probably failing intermittently, and, if true, will cause a loss of power, at very least, and a stumbling engine, at most. Replace with a BMW-branded CPS.

The two lean codes could be caused by intake leaks, downstream of the MAF. The gasket between the throttle body and the intake manifold has been known to fail.

Don't know what a "vacuum jet pump" is.

Ed, I apologize It is called a "Sucking Jet Pump" (Part #1) and I am also suspicious of #4 in the diagram.



I tried the intake spray trick around the TB and no change in the motor. Unless it is leaking at the bottom of the gasket. I am just going to get a smoke test done and stop with all the guessing.

Here is the diagram of my sucking jet pump:
Engine => Vacuum control => Vacuum control - engine

And, here's a picture of mine:


It has three hoses. One is shown removed here on my M54 which goes from the F connector to the sucking jet pump.


If you have a simple layperson's explanation for how the sucking jet pump works, I'd be interested in the story.

PS: To the OP: What exactly was the problem you identified?

Blue, it has not yet been confirmed but I can hear air right at the jet pump and the line I noted in the diagram. Just by giving it a small turn I can hear the noise go away. That is what I am hoping.

I haven't opened mine up (i.e. broken it apart) to confirm but it's almost certainly the same principal as described in attached file, page 12.

RDL: A very informative .pdf! I've seen BB's posts regarding the sucking jet pump and I had no clue as to what a sucking jet pump was or did. It certainly had a strange name.

It is not a pump at all. It is simply a brake booster that uses intake manifold pressure to boost the master cylinder. When the car is started, the pressure on the intake manifold side of the jet pump is less than the intake boot side, so air flows from the intake boot into the intake manifold. The pump uses the Venturi principle to constrict the flow of air which increases the velocity of the airflow. This in turn creates a vacuum on the brake booster inlet side, which improves braking power. It's just a clever way to scavenge pressure differential to achieve an improvement to braking with no electrical component or parasitic loss.
