Nav Credit being extended ???

People.

Does anyone has any idea about the Nav Credit being extended past October 2011 ?? Does anyone has any update on this matter or any other incentives coming into effect ?

No one knows for sure (spoke to my dealer this week). The dealer's take was that they would probably extend it, but it's a gamble either way.

I was told by my dealer that the Nav credit came about because the Japanese supplier of the non-Nav chip was shut down by the tsunami. This forced BMW to equip every car with Nav, whether the owner wanted Nav or not. So BMW did the right thing and included it at no cost (by giving every buyer the Nav credit). The dealer states they now have another source for non-Nav chips, will once again to build the cars both ways, so will stop offering the credit.

Is this accurate? Who knows? Is it logical? Seems to be. My guess is that BMW will stop offering the credit either in November or December, thereby adding $1,730 of "profit" to each car.

Will there be another credit / promotion coming? Probably - they have run a Holiday Sales event every year that I can remember. But there is no telling what that event will bring; the Nav credit is a bird in the hand.

Who buys a $55k+ car without nav?

Yes, we all know that any Garmin or Tom Tom (or Google) will actually do the job better but no one would even think of sticking one of those on the widshield of an F10.

At this point in car development isn't making it an option of any sort kind of like offering A/C as an option (I remember in the 70's when adding A/C added about 25% to the price of a car)?

The cars should simply come equipped with nav pretty much like there should be no leather seating "option" on a car in this price range.

Totally agree. And an even better question is "Who buys a USED $55k car without Nav?" Regardless of how much you dislike the OEM system, you'd kill your resale to build an F10 without it.

BMW built a bunch of 2010 and 2011 535 and 550 GT's without Nav, and pretty much forced them down dealers' throats. Many of them are still sitting in dealerships. (A GT with HUD but no Nav seems to be a pretty rediculous combination).

And that's why it's optional. So they can keep the base price lower and they know the take rate is very high. Hence more profit on the option.

I think that making things "options" that they know everyone in this segment is going to want actually cheapens the brand's cache.

It's really low rent.

What's next, are they going to charge extra for power windows?

Holy crap.

The very concept of that almost made me spit up my morning coffee.

Great image!

Have you ever spec'd a Porsche? Floor mats are an option. My buddy paid extra for sun visors on his Boxster. Yet people don't associate Porsche with cheap....

I wonder if the NAV credit applies when the car was ordered, or when it is finally delivered? I ordered my car in September, it was built at the end of October, but I probably won't get it until December....?

This is how i was told it works.

USA delivery: If the deal is available on the day when the order is placed, you will get it even though there is delay in shipping the car .
European delivery: You have to take the delivery at the welt with in 120 days, we cant put a order now and say i will pick it up next April (Just saying)

Since you are getting it delivered to here i believe you should be good to go, no matter when they deliver the car.

I did. And now that I'm "selling" it there's no shortage of interest either. I'm pretty sure there are P cars and R8s and plenty of other cars costing multiples of that number being bought and sold w/o nav all the time.

More to the point, who buys a mid-size luxury sedan w/o nav? Well, let's see. Some people want to keep their cars for a really long time and spec it for themselves, so resale value is almost irrelevant to them.

Even when you prioritize resale value, it only matters if you're keeping it 2-4 years. Beyond that I would say nav has a trivial impact on resale value. First of all, this component gets obsolete fast...arguably quicker than any other part of the car. Second, the buyer who wants to buy a 6+ yr old BMW and keep it 'forever' probably wants as few breakable electronics as possible. Look for a 6+ yr old E60 or E39 now, does nav matter (or have a significant impact on resale value)?

At the risk of digressing too much, I would ask: if you are going to keep the car for ~3 years and resale value will keep you up at night, why not consider leasing instead

And....Back to the OP's question....

Any chance of BMW actually doing us a favor and keeping the NAV credit for November. Could you imagine it? 1730 Nav, 1500 Holiday cash, 1000 loyalty, AND 0.9% APR. Am I just dreaming here?
