Seriously though - wouldn't be surprised if it is some temperature sensor for the A/C?

Sweet! Always wanted one of those at first i thought it was for the ambient light, but since no light being emitted i was thinking a sensor of some sort, just bugs me not knowing..lol

Temperature sensor.

It used to be behind a grille but I guess it's just cheaper to have it stick out like that. I know that on my mother's 325i, if I point my V1 radar detector at it, it triggers a Laser alarm (haven't tried it in my X3) so it is indeed a temp sensor.
