Question E28 Automatic 535i auto trans. prob smog test

Sold my 1985 E28 w/automatic transmission. Car was in excellent driving condition. New owner took it for a smog check ... car passed ... but right after, the transmission went out. No prior issues with the tranny. Two trusted BMW mechanics have responded that this is not uncommon and the trans can be destroyed with improper smog check on this California car (as well as similar years 7 series). I just found a similar mention online as well as a quote that a service bulletin was issued at some previous time with a warning about this. Anyone able to confirm or give me more info? Thanks so much!

You can do a search about ZF 4HP22 transmissions and you'll find that the trans can be damaged if the engine in revved too high while not in gear. The new owner may have a good case.
