Mein Auto: 2005 X3
I am thinking of test driving the 3.5i 2012 X3.

I understand it has a few extras other than just the big motor. Xenons, run flats. Any others? Also, I have never had run flats. Seems to me they would make the ride harsh. Any thoughts?

Also, it is really a bit more than I can afford unless I put a big down payment. So I am nervous and hope I do not like it

I have the 2005 X3 3.0 and have never even come close to winding it out. Around where I live, there are no fast roads.

But I think it would be OK to test drive it just to see the difference. Also, I think the one at the dealer has sport seats which I would like to try, as well as the adjustable suspension.

I stumbled across an option on other cars called the "Comfort Seats" or something like that. they had electric thigh supports and electric side bolsters for fattys. I thought that was cool as I am not as thin as I once was Why are these not available as an option? Seems rather silly not to have them!

Try the Chappaquiddick Expressway in the wee hours.

So what you really need is a 28i with the Convenience (Xenon) and Sports Activity Packages (Sport seats).

Yes, I have to agree as well. My current car is the fastest car I ever had. I had a C Class before this and this is much faster. I forget what the number was on the C Class but it was a slower one I am sure. 280? 300? Anyways, I have never had the 2012 out on the highway during a test drive so that is next.

The 2.8 X3 is perfect for anyone on the CAPE.......come on, there isn't a road on the CAPE where you can really drive a BMW.....period. If you love the X3, go for it. I went from an M3 to the X3 and I actually love it. I have to admit, I will seek out another M3 just as a fun car for fair weather.

I thought that all of the new X3s came with run flats. If the 28i doesn't come with run flats, then that's one more plus in its favor, IMHO.

I have driven the 2012 x3 xdrive35i at a BMW driving event yesterday. They are generous enough to let me push the vehicle hard & furious for 10 autocross runs. I'm very impress with its suspension & handling.

They also provide a MB GLK & a Lexus RX for comparison. In my opinion, BMW x3 is definitely more maneuverable & probably the best handling SUV I have ever driven. GLK is close second due to lighter weight, however it suffers from less hp & lighter torque at low rpm. Now, Lexus RX is a pig. I find it very difficult to push RX through the autocross without knocking off cones that is if you bother to keep up with x3's laptime.

Below are some photos from yesterday:

Apparently the Porta-John coachwork designers are now working for Benz and Toyota.

I agree about the roads on the Cape, they suck for real driving! I sometimes go to NY, CT area. Not all that much better I should go west! And yes, a 2.8i is fine for me, for sure. Although I know the RX is a different beast, that and the 2.8i are on my very short list. Sometimes I just like to change things up because... I can That is why God made 3 year leases
