E82 / E88 1 Series (2008 - 2013)
BMWs throw back to the iconic 2002, with a renewed form and function. The smallest car in BMW's line up but still packs a punch. Available in coupe or convertible, powered by either an inline 6 in the 128 or the twin turbo rocket sled 135.

1er scores well in Euro NCAP Crash tests

In the most recent Euro NCAP crash tests, the 1er scored 5 stars with a predominantly strong showing, as usual.

Like the F25 X3 though, the pole test does leave a bit to be desired, same with the head restraints. Good to see that pedestrian ratings with the newer BMWs have improved.

Hooray for the pedestrians. Any information about drivers and passengers? I've always felt pretty safe in my 528.

Thanks. Like many people living in Europe, we walk as much as we drive

F20 occupants generally did well. Overall rating was 91% and 5 stars out of 5. Frontal impact was good,

side impact with a pole was poor and whiplash was marginal.

E39 and e60 have 4 star ratings but on the old system. The didn't do the pole impact test before 2009. 2010 530d has 5 stars using the new rating system. BMW likely made changes to the e60,

4 stars is not bad for 1999.
BMW made changes to the e39 based on results from an earlier NCAP test. 1999 cars are newer than the test, so your car will have the upgrades.

Driver dummy had potential leg and pelvis injuries.

Front impact
After the impact, the door aperture was little deformed and the body structure was stable. The left front wheel crushed the driver's footwell, causing a body seam to burst and expose the wheel arch liner. The driver and passenger airbags worked well and the load limiting belts reduced chest injury risks from those seen in the first test. The knee impact areas included hard contact points which could injure the driver's knees, upper legs and pelvis.
Pedestrian results were poor.

Pedestrian
BMW needs to be pay more attention to pedestrian protection. The front of the car is particularly hard and unforgiving, and 12 out of 18 test sites rated as 'poor'.
