Here is the question 2011 550i or 2009 BMW m5

Mileage is about the same both around 10,000 both used.

Price is about the same around 54,000 each

Options are on par with each other. Cold Weather, Prem 2 , Conv Package ect.

Really a tuff spot. I have loved the M5 for years However

The 2011 550i has the new body and new features. Plus with the Dinan Stage 2 Upgrade your horsepower is on par with the M5 and better gas mileage.

What do you guys think?

What are your thoughts here. I am also only looking to keep either car for about 3 years so resale would be important and it looks like the 05-10 M5 are taking it on the chin

Let me know your thoughts.

How long you keeping it? Does abysmal fuel economy matter? Which trans in the M5?

V10 will be super spendy to fix out of warranty, although I am not in tune with it's reliability. Many have panned the SMG in the M5 and the V10 is very thirsty.

However the E60 M5 is one of the coolest BMW's ever built when driven hard.

What are you after?

I would think 2-4 years. Resale does matter a lot to me. The gas matters but 11-15 MPG is not a deal breaker no matter what you choose. I am looking at SMG cars for the M5 and the Auto on the 550i

Biggest factor would be the new body I guess I like both and think both are aggressive. You know how you are always on the fence the new 2013 M5 is just around the corner this spring and you hate to be sitting on the old model. Hence why I was thinking about the 550 and getting the Dinan upgrade. Plus I am sure the M ground kit.

I gues the biggest question is what is the best bang for your buck deprecitation wise the next 3 years and what makes most sense dollar wise.

This is a no brainer - the 550 for sure. The 2009 M5 is perhaps the worst M5 of them all. That auto tranny is clunky, rough, unpredictable, unreliable and all around awful. The 2011 550 is light years ahead of that M5. They will both depreciate big time but the M5 will depreciate even more. IMO the 2011 550 is the way to go

i don't necessarily agree.

Yes, the transmission is awful, as you say.

I don't agree on the depreciation. A 2009 M5 at $55k has already depreciated about 45%. It's not going to depreciate as steeply in the next two years. HOWEVER, warranty expiration will play a big role in resale cost.

I also disagree that the E60 M5 is the "worst" of them all. It's one of the most unique cars ever built with 4 doors. How many other cars are runing around with a 500 HP, race bred V10 under the hood? Not many.

OP: I'd say if you can find one with the MT, buy it for a year and enjoy it while you can. You can sell it while it still has some warranty left and not lose your a**. Meanwhile, you can buy a 2012 550 when the time comes which is even better than the 2011

Actually, looking at used M5's, a 2009 with 10k miles and at $55k is a damn good deal. Something wrong with it?

Nothing wrong with it at all eager seller and under 10K on the OD. The 2011 has around 11K on the OD and they want 54,000 and that is with the Cold weather package Prem 2 Dynamic package and a few other things.

Again I have done my DD but tough decesion. Lots of people say go with the 2011 due to new body and features and jump on the Dinan 2 upgrade.

NeedDecafe I also agree with you in the fact that the 2009 M5 had a sticker of 99,500 so I have to think after 2 years of driving I am still sitting on a 40K car.

I have been jumping in and out of cars for a long time but this is my first head scratcher. Anybody have any other points to add. Trying to see if I am missing anything.

If this is a hard decision after driving both I'd say go with the 550 due to what others have already told you. To choose the more risky and dated M5 the decision should feel easy. I would pick the M5 every time with no doubts. Here's a question that could help guide you. If both cars were in you drive-way which one would you pick for your commute?

My gut feeling also tells me 550. It has newer technology (which for me would be a significant factor), stunning looks inside and out, monstrous engine + Dinan S2 on top of it (making it on par with M5?) - no brainer for me. Good luck.

Having had the pleasure of driving an `08 M6 for 3 years, I will tell you that V10 M cars are a lot of fun but pricey to maintain. These cars go through tyres like hay fever sufferers go through tissues. You'll also be wise to have a handy back-stock of 10W-60 synthetic oil, as it will take a quart about every 4K miles.

What she said. I had a chance to buy a 2008 M5 (PRISTINE) for 55k and I chose my 11 535i. The M5 was a 6MT (which I required), but the fuel economy combined with the repair costs makes the M5 too expensive in my book. You have to accept that, in addition to tires, brakes and gas, the M5 parts and labor costs are very high. There is a reason why a 3 year old M5 is worth about half of its original cost with less than 20k miles on it. It is the same reason I declined a nice CPO 750li (no offense Leslie).

The E60 M5 represents the last in a long line of NA engines, and the sound of that engine at full scream is enough to give you goosebumps. it's also harsh and the SMG is very clunky (like grandma moving through shifts, even at the highest settings) and it takes the top half of the revs to really get the pull vs the effortless (lazy?) power all across the curve on an S2 550. it's a tough decision.

this is really simple to break down though. if your heart is in control you would probably take the E60. but the rational brain would choose the 550. the purists would take the e60 m5 9x out of 10.

If the E60 was more of a looker, I'd be more enticed to say go for it.

Since it's not, I think the F10 550 without question.

Had to make the same decision and went with the f10. E60 is not a car to use as a daily driver with smg and I'm not rowing my own gears in traffic. If this is a limited use vehicle for you then go with 4 dr m3. Otherwise 550i the whole way and don't look back.

It all depends on how much sport you want. If you are looking for a race car with 4 doors that you want to track, the E60 M5 wins by a mile. It is lighter and more nimble than the F10 and at high speeds will run away from the F10 550 -- Dinan Stage 2 or not. And the sound of the V10, especially with a killer exhaust like RPI is intoxicating. But the E60 M5 is not a great daily driver, especially for those of us who live in urban areas. It has little low end torque and it's SMG transmission is clunky. You could get the manual but the manual is slower than the SMG as it was not designed for the car. But once you are at super speeds, the E60 M5 is magnificent and so fast.

If getting a kick ass daily driver is your goal, go for the F10 550 with Dinan Stage 2. With 580 foot pounds of torque, the car should be dramtically faster and more tractable at speeds you can actually drive at in the US. Indeed when I've gone up against an E60 M5 from a standing start, my bone stock E60 550 was faster to about 40 mph. And an E60 550 is a turtle compared to a Dinan Stage 2 F10 550. And in terms of luxury and comfort, the F10 is a great leap forward from the E60. But that being said, the F10 is big and feels heavy in the turns (feels more like a MB than a BMW IMHO). And it's engine sound sucks.

Both are great cars. Just totally different. If I had only one car to buy and needed an all around daily driver, my heart would say E60 M5 but my head would say F10 550 with Dinan Stage 2. But if I needed a weekend fun car, I would get the E60 M5.

When I was looking to replace my 535i I checked out M5, M6, F10, and ended up with the F12 only because 90% of the time I am alone in my car. My vote goes for the 550i with the Dinan S2 upgrade, you have lots of warranty left and you have gobs of power when you needed but won't break the bank on R&M costs, like others have said its a no brainer.
