Whoa, stop the bus!

We had this option? BMWFS approves?

Suraj,

I have a hard time believing this... Make sure you get it in writing that he will pay for replacement RFT's if the dealer refuses to take the vehicle back with non-RFT's.

Additionally, are you aware that the RFT's are worth $2000? What happens to the original tires? If he is replacing them them Continental ExtremeContact DWS (best choice) then he is basically pocketing $900. The Contis cost $1100 installed from Discount Tire, the Dunlop RFT's are worth $2000. No wonder he is offering to replace them for "free". Ask him what he is doing with the RFT's and tell him you plan to keep them. See what he says...

Make sure you find out what tires he is planning to put on the car... Don't accept anything other than Conti DWS or Michelin Tour HP's.

Also, on the multi contour seats, make sure you go sit in a Sports Activity X5 with the Sports Seats and get in/out multiple times. They will probably be fine for you, but best to check

No way... I had non RFT's on my 2008 535i. I had to put the original tires back on. BTW, I thought I read that you preferred RFT's? Not trying to bait you - just curious

Great point Matt, without guys like you and this forum, I would have made many non-optimal decisions. thanks again!

He did indicate Continental tires, I will probe more tomorrow about the specific model. If it is indeed true that BMW will accept the vehicle back with Contis, then I should go for it, right? Since Contis ride much better than RFTs. Any gotcha here?

Multi-contours: I will try to find a vehicle with and without them. It just feels unfair to walk into a dealership to feel the product knowing well that the business is going elsewhere. In either case, I have few weeks after ordering to make last minute changes. Also, since cost wise, it isn't a significant issue, I might as well get it and avoid being in confusion

Perhaps I am asking a basic question: If all season tires outperform RTFs in handling, comfort, noise, weight and price, why does BMW keep pushing the RFTs?

With RFTs, BMW can avoid the expense and weight of a normal spare.

Also, there are all-season RFTs and summer RFTs - the difference we are suggesting is RFTs or non-RFTs.

BTW, I have Continental DWS on my 545 and love 'em.

Mike, are you suggesting that I should ask the dealer to just give me the stock RFTs? How can we check what all tires BMW considers acceptable upon return of vehicle at lease end?

Suraj,

If he said they are Contis, then I believe the ExtremeContact DWS are the only ones that will fit the 20-inch rims. Here are your options in order of preference...

1) Tell him you want the Contis as offered, but he should leave the original RFT's in the trunk.
2) Tell him you want the Contis as offered, and he must provide a written guarantee that he will replace them with OEM RFT's if required at lease turn-in at your local dealer.
3) Tell him you want the Contis as offered plus $1000.
4) Tell him you will keep the OEM RFT's and then buy your own Contis from TireRack or Discount Tire yourself.

As for the multi-contours, don't feel bad. That's what dealers are for. Remember, they had the chance to earn your business and failed. Besides, you don't need to ask a bunch of questions. Just find an X5 with the Sports Seats and sit in it. That's all you need to do.

From the weak interior materials, to the weak engine and handling, to the horrible view from the drivers seat, etc., etc. I couldn't believe how bad the vehicle was regardless of the price.
Did you drive an FX35 or an FX50? With the performance specs that the FX50 shows, it's hard to believe that the engine would seem "weak".
