Mine is doing the same exact thing...My mechanic is saying something about the heads and a seal - I'm going to be leaving mine with him for about a week...He also mentioned that this happens withh all of the 7's, and that 7 owners should file a class action suit because it is a defect...

Your mechanic is talking about replacing the valve stem seals, which are on each head.

Regarding why bad valve stem seals would cause oil burning at idle, but not when you first start the car in the morning... If you look through some of the pictures from when I replaced mine (sorry I still don't have them organized still), you can see the location at which each stem comes out of the head is raised up above the head's main surface a bit, so, in order for oil to start building up and burning, the engine must be on and there must be vacuum pulling oil (or pressure in the crankcase / under the valve cover pushing oil) UP past the stem seals and to the area where the stem and head meet. Once the engine is off, any oil pulled up the valve stem seal would just fall back down.

Valve stem seals

New seal seated down into place (slightly below middle of pictures)

New seal popped up, about to be put into place

Valve stem without seal on

Parts I replaced during valve stem seal replacement (left to right... several VANOS adjuster compression rings, upper timing cover gaskets, spark plug tube, 2 bags of valve stem seals (did the entire engine, 1 bag per head...total: I think just under $200)

Yeah, it's a lonnnnng job, but $4,000 is pretty high. $2,000 I could see, but not $4,000.

Hey Keif, I plan on changing the spark plug pipe due to the blue smoke on idle. What parts do I need to change while in there? And also I'm going to change coolant pipe too. I just want to know whats parts I will need and a rough price on parts. Thx in advance.

Thanks for the info Keif! My mechanic quoted me $4,000 also, and said it would take about a week to finish...is that accurate?

I don't know that replacing the spark plug tube will change the blue smoke at idle... It shouldn't really impact oil getting into the cylinder, only oil leaking down onto the spark plug, which would only make the car run a little rough at worst.

Unfortunately yeah, it took me all day each day of a weekend, plus a few evenings. It's a freaking pain. $4,000 is steep though... $2,000 would be reasonable. Doing it again, it would probably just take a very full weekend.

I'll be curious to hear what EGR piece he suggests replacing, or what he does to fix it.
