Has anyone had their X5 3.0D chipped to increase bhp. I have heard it increases it by up to 40bhp? Is it worth it? And does it invalidate the warranty??
Any info would be good, thanks |

I had a chip + different air filter installed on my 320d, and another guy that I know chipped his '02 530d. Both of these chips came from Wetterauer (http://www.wetterauer.de/).
I wasn't so interested in what hp gains I got, but the torque increase - and that was a seat of the pants thing. I have driven that chipped 530d and all that I can say is that it is a rocket ship. It is quite simply insane. Another odd thing about the chip in my 320d was that highway fuel economy actually improved. As if it needed to! It is an expensive performance gain though - probably in the neighborhood of 1300 EUR for the X5 3.0d. I would guess that there are other companies in the UK that do chip tuning as well for your BMW, and I have read about such companies from TOTAL BMW Magazine. Wetterauer's chip for the X5 3.0d raises hp to 245 hp, and torque from 500Nm at 1750 RPM to 580Nm at 2000 RPM. It doesn't translate into a much higher top speed, but getting from 70 km/h to 150 km/h will give you that "oh yeah" feeling I am sure. My (cough) guess is that it does invalidate your warranty. If you do something, please lets us know what and your results! - |

I had mine done when I bought it. See this thread, half way down for link to Birds http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/showthread.php?t=44364 It has made a fantastic difference to the performance, it has much better pick up and the increase in torque is substantial. Birds are able to cover the BMW warranty if your under 6k miles when its done, if not its best to talk to them and get them to clarify the position. If your anywhere near Swindon, you are welcome to try mine and see first hand what the difference is Jon |

Sounds perfect if they can protect the warranty.
How much did it cost you? |

All the info you need, this is what they sent me. The pdf is this one http://www.birdsauto.com/1-PDFs/E4611460200.pdf Thankyou for your enquiry, we are really pleased with the new Motronic Diesel Upgrade for the X5, and have pleasure in attaching a PDF which contains some information on it. The Unit costs £951.10 + VAT to install, and you are quite right that it contains a 3 year warranty. As the unit does not affect the standard BMW warranty anyway, then you will be able to take the extended BMW warranty on the car. This will cover all items except for the unit itself. This unit will currently be covered for up to 3 years within the Hartge warranty which we manage for the UK. It is not yet clear whether there will be an extended warranty policy available from Hartge, however it is important to remember that the unit can be completely removed and re-installed in another car, thus returning the X5 to standard . The unit is easily removed and re-usable in another car. Would you like to order one? The lead time is 7-10 days, although we can source one faster if needed. With thanks again for your enquiry, and if you have any questions then please just ask |
