BMW N20 Power Upgrade from Kelleners Sport Bumps HP to almost 300, with 310ft-lbs

BMW N20 I4 engine tune boosts 300hp 310ft-lbs tq

It was only a matter of time until tuners started unlocking the potential of the BMW N20, inline four cylinder turbocharged engine. Kelleners Sport is the first tuner to release a tune module for the N20. Their performance chip, or tune, appears to be installed by the OBDII port is quick and easy to instal and supposedly completely reversible, perhaps before heading into the dealership.

The BMW N20 motor is BMW new generation of TwinPower turbo engines. The all aluminum engine is lighter and more efficient then the equivalently 6 cylinder engines it is quickly replacing in the BMW line up. The N20 is now the base engine for all the series ending in 28 and for good reason. With twin-scroll turbocharging with high-pressure direct-injection and BMW's VALVETRONIC intake control it turns out 240 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque. Offering more power and torque than BMW's normally aspirated 3.0-liter inline six.

Those are just the impressive stock numbers. Tune up your N20 with a Kelleners Sport module and you'll get 294 horsepower and 310 ft-lbs of torque! That takes the base model 328i in the soon to be released F30 2012 3 series sedan and puts the power number right on par with the 335i (300 hp, 300 ft-lbs). Keep in mind this is just the first chip, think of the power extraction a year down the road once tuners have more time with the N20! Expect tunes or chips from industry heavyweights Dinan, Active Autowerke and others coming soon. I expect these power and torque numbers are just the beginning!

Now who's excited that BMW is bring a turbo inline 4 to the US?

If it is anything like the original tuning for the E9X N54, it will probably be $1,000 - $2,000 until there is some competition to bring the prices down.

I'd expect to see a bunch of tuners jump into the game and get pricing under $1k in the next few months.

no reason it should be more than $500-$600 plus an hour of labor to install, just like the VW 2 liter turbo.

So far, the tuning potential of the new 328i is the only positive thing I can pull from all the reading.

It puts it's output in line with the 335i but you need to remember its lighter than the 335i too so it's actual performance should be slightly better but still be over 5.5k cheaper. It's the 3 series to own in my opinion.

Lighter weight makes it far more desirable (to me) than the 335i.

+1. Apart from the obvious engine note difference I can't see why anyone could have a negative thing to say about this car/engine. I would go as far as to say that every report has been very positive about it and it's proved weight combined with the reduction in price will make it a sure fire winner in all world markets.

The only obvious reason for picking the 335i in my mind is the sobbery of owning a six cylinder and if you are that way inclined then you're a badge whore and not a genuine ethusiast in my book.

The 335 comes with $2500 of options I'd get on a 328 anyway. So it is only $3500 for the 335 for someone like me, plus it comes with other goodies.
Also, considering this is a new bmw engine type are you sure you want to tune it before we even know if it has any issues? Any idea what extra stress this might cause? Why wouldn't BMW just enable it this way if it could be done? MPG?

but you still have to get sport, and leather, before you know it the 335 is easy over 50K. Not worth it. The 328 offers a big improvement over the e90.

I don't see BMW keeping the N54 motor much longer (it was introduced in '06) and maybe not past the the midpoint of the F3X model run when BMW typically tweaks the line. So, if one is considering a 335i now, it may be best to wait.

All of a sudden people are liking this 4cyl engine. I knew that a chip would put it right up with a stock 335!!

Whats there not to like, more power, less weight, better fuel economy, and it can be chipped.

You guys serious? The N55 stock will do what this car can do and I am willing to bet even if the N20 is tuned I still doubt it can do the 0-60 in less than 5 sec. even with a tune. It may have the same hp but will it have the same torque band width? Then if you are going to compare cars you can't compare a tuned car with a stock car. The N55 can still be tuned to 350-360hp. This is all conjecture at the moment but still amazes me that some of you guys think that this N20 will outperform the N55. No doubt the N20 looks like a great engine but so is the N55 and I just think that some of you guys are jumping the gun here by just looking at the PEAK numbers.

I don't see why people cannot compare a tuned N20 to a stock N55. Knowing the N20 can be tuned to match the stock N55 power, makes the N20 more appealing. For the money saved, one can add a few more options and get better mpg.

IMO it isn't fair to compare a tuned car to a stock car. Let's look at it this way. What if I said my Tuned Audi is faster than your stock BMW? You guys would be up in arms saying that you can't compare a tuned car to a stock car. No difference here. Not fair if you compare a tuned N20 to a sto N55 because like I said the N55 can just go out get a tune and be a lot faster.
