Alternator or battery problem

Hello everyone, hope you had a nice long weekend...

Ok, so I have a radar detector that tells me the voltage in the car while the engine is running and now it shows that it is 10.6 and if it drops below 10.0 - the RD shuts off pretty much because the voltage is low.

The car started up fine 3 different times last night, but I left it charging over night and it looks like the battery was about 80% charged this morning as the charger was blinking with a green light. However, on my way to work my radar detector kept shutting down and evey time I turn it on.... it says low volt. so far I had the RD for over two months and always said 13.7 or 14.0 V.

I'm going to test the RD on a diffrent car to make sure that is not the problem, but if is not the RD and the battery charged last night.... would you say I have a bad Alternator?

Thanx.

Sounds like an alternator problem your alternator should be putting out at least 13.5 amps. Stop at an AutoZone or Advance and have them check the output for you usually a NC deal.

Didn't get a chance to visit AutoZone yet, but if the alternator is not producing power or charging the batt.... where does the car get juice to power the electronics?..... ??

For now I have to keep my car on life support and plug it in every night when I come home so the batt has juice to start the car in the morning... from 1 to 5 how complicated is it to replace an alternator?? 5 being the hardest.

From the battery.

And running it like this may kill the battery also.

Purchase a volt meter and put it on the + and - terminals of the battery (or from ground to + terminal of the alternator) while the engine is running. Should read around 13.7 volts. I would not necessarily use the RD as the final answer on voltage output.
