They would just use the N55 with a factory tune, and get ALL those "newer tech" advantages & better mpg's, you listed.

Speaking of the "IS" it has those power & cooling advantages over a 335i that perhaps can be added, 3rd party, HOWEVER, with the "IS" & BMW, it is ALL under warranty.
The N55 is not superior...it might be more "efficient to build" with 1 turbo instead of 2. But stock for stock the N54 is more powerful then the N55.

I'm not sure where I stand on this issue. In my mind it's really weird that BMW is continuing to produce the N54 at all. It appears to have more performance potential than the N55, especially when tuned. But BMW switched to the N55 for all of its high volume production.

It's got to cost a lot for BMW to continue to build both of those engines at the same time. Common manufacturing economics would say that since the specs are so similar, they would move everything to the N55 as soon as they could.

I would think it cost them a lot less to make the N55. The N54 was the first turbo gas engine in a long time, there were some problems..(i never had any) but others did...i think they made the N55 to fix some problems, and reduce costs(1turbo over 2).

N55 is a great engine, i have driven it. But i thought the N54 made more power higher in the rev band. I think they had excess parts that they use on the IS models, but N55 is mass produced.

I've considered that too...could they really have so many excess N54 parts unusable in the N55 that they would put it in the 335is, the Z4, the 7 series, and the 1 Series M, though?

The 335is was a limited production end of life model...if it were only in that car I would agree with you completely.

I read that BMW hadn't yet developed a tuned version of the n55 when the 335is, 740 and 1m were being conceived. They have since done so and it's possible to upgrade an n55 135 or 335 to the same power level with a kit from BMW. I expect that these models will mark the end of the n54.

V1 and V2 are factory-provided BMW kits. Mine was installed by BMW at the VDC and has certification and warranty coverage by BMW. It is the same upgrade that 335i sedans with the factory Performance Package option receive.

As bmw325 stated (I recall reading this as well), the 740i, 335is, 1M and Z4 35is were well into development when the N55 was conceived, and it was too early in its development to introduce for the higher-power versions. So it was a matter of using the proven N54 powertrain because that's what was known and available. I work in a company that does product development and we have to make these decisions often - take a known entity or one under development. Sometimes you just can't do everything and risk delaying a product to market.

That's what BMW's V2 kit does for the 335i over the V1 - cooling upgrades similar to what's offered in the 335is. And it's covered under warranty as well. These kits were introduced in July 2011 and can also be dealer-installed on N54-powered 335i's from prior model years.
