Will BMW offer a more powerful 335i next year?

Here's our answer. BMW has the next version of the N55 set for release in the 640i Gran Coupe.

Looks like a 315HP/330lb-ft N55. Not a huge difference on paper, but BMW does tend to underrate these engine's power. BMW says it will get the 640 to 60 MPH in 5.4 seconds. I imagine the 335 will be as much as a half second quicker on weight advantages. The Gran Coupe is a huge car...

I think the 2013 F30 M-Sport is the perfect platform to introduce this engine to the F30 platform.

Strange considering that bmws power kit for the n55 ekes out more power than that. Am really surprised they didn't make the kit standard for the f30. Guessing the tuning wasn't completed in time for launch.

Agree. I was expecting better numbers.

BMW knows whom they compete against, though. Specs aside, I'm sure the 335 will do a sub-5 0-60.

if the F30 335i eventually gets a "retuned" N55, would it be possible to retune the N55 engines in older F30 335i's ?

It seems to reason that BMW has power kits in mind for the F30 cars so they can't offer too much initial tuning out of the N55 and ruin their ability to sell the kit later on.

I would fully expect we'll see a factory power kit in the not so distant future that should be available for the N20 and N55 motors available in the F30 line up.

A power kit certainly makes sense considering the aftermarket industry will certainly be tuning the N20 to get more power.

This kit already bumps the power to 300hp / 310 lb-ft

I don't think you'll see the big of a bump as it would dip into 335i sales but some sort of jump from a factory kit in a year or two might make sense.

The N20 stock pulled like a mother.. i cant imagine what that chip would do

The 335is will be released the 3rd model year.

I haven't heard anything new actually, I was being facetious. Quite frankly I'd be surprised if BMW does split the Series. The 3-Series name is legendary and a sales leader. Adding a "new" 4-Series jeopardizes some of that brand equity and splits up the sales numbers. I don't know what advantage BMW would get out of it other than possibly moving the 4-Series further upmarket in price and content.

Ok I see. I agree I hope they just keep it as the 3 series coupe. As far as going up market, a loaded E92 (Non-M) can bump up on 60k pretty fast. Between the 335, M3 and the new 640 it seems like they have that 50-80k coupe range well represented to me.

Although in the case of the F30, BMW has gone and brought it to market slightly ahead of the usual schedule....
its only for a scant few months. I wouldn't expect any major engine changes until sometime in 2013.

I had an E46 323i. The 323 and 325 are the SAME engine. They only changed the model name to stop the confusion as the engines were 2.5/2.8 respectively. Later on they introduced a different engine.

Would still do LS1 swap :-P

The point is/was that the 330 engine (the big 'upgrade' at the time) didn't come along until the '01 MY.

Same displacement and similar design but the 325 had the m54 while the 323 was an m52tu. The 325 made more horsepower but had slighkt lass torque. I forget what all the differences are right now but the intake system was differnt and it had an electronic throttle and different pistons. The exhaust syst was also different. The main goal though was to lower emissions.

Agreed, though comparably-equipped a 335i coupe is only about $1500-1800 more than a 335i sedan (the $3000 difference in base price is partly due to more standard equipment on a 335i coupe). That $1500+ is buying some exclusive features too like LED brake lights and angel eyes, seatbelt extender, expanded ambient lighting, pop-out door bins, etc. If BMW re-names the coupe/vert the 4-Series, they can probably get away with charging a higher premium without really adding anything.

With the new 328i closing the 0-60 time to around 0.3 seconds of the E90 335i, who needs the 335i?

Great point. not to mention the reduced weight, 328 will prob handle slightly better.

That's absurd. You obviously don't get that the everyday big difference is in the 5-60mph, not 0-60mph achieved by over-abusing the powertrain. Not mentioning the weak and unpleasant engine note of the N20 no where as endearing as the N52/N54/N55. You should know better with a Porsche 6 cyl.
