I was trying to take off the upper portion of my air box. E46. I released the three locks. Are there screws that need to come off to get this thing out? I couldn't get it to budge.

hmmm as far as i know there is no screw if u want to open the air box
find another lock ,i believe there is more of them

Now, now... I promised my brothers of the Roundel that I would not speed any longer.
![]() But... Being curious as a cat or like curious George, I took out the BMW standard filter but I left the charcol filter in place and I have driven the car for a few day to see if there are any differences in the normal drive. The answer is, yes. Reset the fuel counter and I drove my normal city speed (35MPH) and average highway speed (80MPH). The result for personal view is 2.1MPG from 19.1 to 21.2 on average. I believe their is less hesitation from my gear shifts 1 & 2. IMO the car can now take BIG gulps of air to what it wishes. I will place the K&N filter when I get it next week (Monday or Tuesday).

i know this is an old topic.. but how did this filter work out for you guys? Arent bmw filters suppose to be "oil-less" design...

question on upper air filter
i try take it out but on upper grey filter has do not take off is it ok to take out the upper one as well? i been driving with upper air filter until i saw this

does any body try to take out upper air filter on 2006 650i model? because upper air filter don't come out on 2006 650i model

The "upper" filter is known as the "charcoal filter". It is held in with clips and just pops out.
Take a look at the third pic in the original post. If you cannot get your hand through the intake hole and push from behind on the 650 then another method is to just pinch the filter elements and pull until the filter pops out. This will probably destroy the filter. You could also try prying the filter out using a small screwdriver on the outer edges of the filter frame. Once the filter is out remove the metal clips that held it in place since you don't want those coming loose and getting caught in the lower filter.

on my 650i is different from 3rd photos original post also upper charcoal filter 4 conner is glue on. so i guess i have to breck loss 4 conners so it is ok to take out the upper charcoal filter right? my charcoal filter has note "DO NOT REMOVE" well thank you for your information

I'm a little confused by this...Is the "upper" filter the same thing as the rectangular charcoal microfilter (not pictured in this thread) in the upper rear of the engine compartment, under the windscreen?

No, this is a charcoal filter that resides in the upper half of the intake cover on all North American BMW intakes. It's there for emission reasons. You can see it in picture 3 and 4 in the original post. In addition to the charcoal filter you have a standard replaceable filter element that does the bulk of the cleaning of the air.

UPDATE = I FINALLY REMOVE UPPER CHARCOAL FILTER LAST SAT. AND OH MY GOD CAR RESPONSE SOOOO MUCH BETTER ON THROTTLE LIKE I WAS ON SPORTS MOD. LIKE YORGI SAID
(It is supposed to give a slight increase in power or at least an improvement in throttle response once removed) YES i can feel increase the power and so much better on throttle response i love it car much faster

Do you guys think the charcoal filter is there for added filtering? Would removing it loose the 2nd protection to the engine?
