Here is the Question 2009 M5 or 2011 550 i

Mileage is about the same both around 10,000 both used.

Price is about the same around 54,000 each

Options are on par with each other. Cold Weather, Prem 2 , Conv Package ect.

Really a tuff spot. I have loved the M5 for years However

The 2011 550i has the new body and new features. Plus with the Dinan Stage 2 Upgrade your horsepower is on par with the M5 and better gas mileage.

What do you guys think?

What are your thoughts here. I am also only looking to keep either car for about 3 years so resale would be important and it looks like the 05-10 M5 are taking it on the chin

Let me know your thoughts.

I owned a 2011 550i (manual) for about three weeks and 1500 miles. I then took advantage of the dealer's 30 day trade in no questions asked policy for a 2010 M5 in great condition. These cars are not comparable. Your decision will turn on what you are looking for. The 550i is gorgeous inside and out. It is a great car for highway driving, but not great in traffic (the manual is balky and hard to operate) and certainly not the car you want if you like to drive on twisty roads -- which I do every day. For me that was the disappointment -- body roll. It just felt big. Yet when you go over expansion joints and pot holes...you still get a big THUD. Nothing about the car feels particularly quick either.

The M5 is a whole different ballgame. Its a true sports sedan, not a luxury cruiser. I ask you this...would you really want to put more power into the 550i without stiffening the car? On exit ramps you'll still be going whoaaa...better back off...as compared to "this is amazing". Overall the M5 has a much nicer ride...less harsh AND more sporty. The car feels smaller and much more manuverable. It is definitely very fast. The SMG takes some getting used to, but once you learn how to shift it it is smooth and fun. You can download the European spec software files which will smooth out the shifting and remove the 155mph limiter.

Good luck! Ley

Mein Auto: none at the moment
I went through the same process early this year, a fully loaded F10 550i from 10-2010 or a individual E60 M5 02-2009 (last model 2010) with equal km's.

Went for the M5 and never looked back. I made the right decision.

Go for the M5

I bought a 2006 CPO M5. It was 3 years old and 36k on the clock.

I did also look at the 550 which I was very impressed with.

In the end after driving both the choice was an easy one. I bought the M5 and never regreted it.

It is not cheap. $1,500 worth of tires every 18 months. SMG gearbox repairs - clutch ($2400)- hydraulic pump (warranty) - fork sesnor (warranty).

Fuel mileage is a good laugh. 11.5mpg in summer with air conditioning on. 12.5 in winter without a/c on.

But nothing beats the sound and drama of the V10 engine - pure magic.

Buy the M5 if you can. Good luck.
