Instrument Cluster issues
So my odometer stopped working... Replaced the hearts only to find out that it still does not work. Any help or direction as to what I can do to resolve this would be splendid...
Thanks!! Sent from my Android using Bimmer |

Have you fixed your problem? I have the same issue on my 86 735i, and was told that if the gears don't fix it, it's the motor that runs the odometer. I haven't got around to trying that yet.

Still have yet to fix the problem. Gears fit on perfect, my next guess would be the motor. Let me know if you find out anything

I contacted VDO repair in North Hollywood Ca, and they say it's a common issue.
$140 later they will repair it. Takes about 4 days. I was contemplating on repairing it myself, but will probably just send it to them. |

I have the same problem, odometer stopped working. Someone quoted me $400 to fix. $140 sounds really good. Either of you have it fixed yet?

I'm in the process of rebuilding the suspension this week and the car will be idle for about a week. I'm repainting a few of the suspension pieces.....
In the mean time, I am going to send my cluster to Them this week. It will only take 3-4 days they say. Spending $400 is too much! They are probably replacing the entire speedometer unit for that price. I will keep you posted. |

Okay so I found another cluster at the wrecking yard and swapped the speedometer out.
I had to play with it a while to figure out how to change the milage. I was able to pull the pin out holding the black star shaped pieces that lock the numbers.(Open one up to see what I'm referring too) Anyways, spent $40.00 on the cluster and an hour of my time. Up and running now with a working odometer! I suggest getting a good spare and take it apart. You can do it! |

I have 1984 528e, odometer and speedo not working, bought used cluster from 86' model and installed in car. The good news is odometer and speedo work good but no tach, fuel, or mpg and the lights in center of cluster stay on regaurdless of switch position. Appears to be different circuitry from 84' model to 86' model. I put the 86' speedo in the 84' cluster and it won't work. There are 5 pins on both circuit boards that connect to the speedometer head, 5 are used on 84' but only 4 are used on 86' model. My question: is there any way to make this work?
