98 528i alarm beep and door locks

Hi folks,
What's the trick to get the alarm to beep upon locking from the remote? Was out with wife and could not locate car in parking lot. Did not go over well in the cold weather. Also, how do I get the doors to auto lock and unlock at park? And is there any reason not to not want that?

If the siren is not beeping, it's defective, and needs to be replaced. The lights should still flash.

The dealer must program the lock/unlock.

You could have initiated the PANIC alarm if you really needed to find the car (from the owners manual):

First, has the audible alerts ever been heard since you've owned the car. If not, the audible alerts have been turned off. And do you get the visual alerts?

BMW doesn't have an "auto UNLOCK" when gear is put into park. You have to either press the central lock/unlock button (right there by your hand and gear shift lever) or pull twice on the door handles.

To program auto lock (@ 5 MPH)...and to turn on the audible alarm siren chirps....you must take the car to the dealer..or someone with the aftermarket software/hardware that can go into the BMW proprietary systems and turn them on.

I just realized recently mine doesn't chirp anymore.

I'm not too concerned with it though (much bigger problems to worry about in life) ... but if it's useful to the OP, here's what I found when I opened the bestlinks in 80-posts-per-view mode and ran a quick "/" thread search for "alarm" (F3) ... which found this, among others:

- How to understand the BMW E39 EWS alarm drive-away protection system (1) (2) (pdf) & troubleshoot the alarm & hood switch (1) (2) (3) (4) or replace the siren (1) or disabling/enabling the unlock chirp (1) (2) & how to maintain (1) and repair your hood release bowden cable (1) (2) (3)

What we'd request of the OP is to read these, and then let us know via pictures & discussions what was found out so that the next person with this issue starts off where the OP left off.

My siren is dead. I can set the alarm off with the motion detector and get the lights to flash but no sound. Bummer for a car with 29k on the clock. It is 13 years old though. Why not just build it to the horn like others... Geez. I'll have to live with the locks or buy a cable online and d/l the software. Thanks for the assist. I need to master the search feature.
