Question MY10 rear view camera backwards compatible with MY08?

Rear view camera on 2010 X5s has a lot better low-light performance.
It looks like it switches to a night vision mode.

Does anyone know if the new camera can substituted for the old one on 2008 vehicle?
It would seem like it should be possible, assuming the camera outputs a standard video signal with the same resolution as the old camera.

Has anyone done that or do any of our resident techies know the answer?

Thank you all ahead of time for your help.

The JBBF module is different (allows for the side cameras), and the screen is higher res. If you change to the new CIC, you will actually get better resolution with the old camera. What I would suggest you do is to get an LED light and mount it under the rear bumper. It will augment the ambient light and let your (and my) exisiting camera perform better at night.

I keep thinking about doing the CIC retro, but thats money I won't get back when I sell. I was planning to hang onto my '09 until the '13 when my warranty runs out and the new X5 is out. The new X5 spyshots don't look promising, it looks more like a wagon than an SAV

Interesting thought. Have you tried adding an LED with any success? I guess it wouldn't be too hard to mock up one night in the driveway just to see. I was thinking LED reverse lights may improve the camera's night time performance. Haven't tried anything yet.

If you did the retrofit when you come to sell you car, put the old CCC back in and then sell on the CIC system. Lots of folks would be interested. You would get at least half back.

As for the new f40 x5 it's very early days yet to make a objective decision on what it looks like.

I can confirm that the old camera works surprisingly well with the new CIC with improved screen. Light levels are not improved but resolution is and of course it's instant on too which is a bonus.
