Navigation Update

$9 DVD's are just the encrypted software, you still have to purchase a key from BMW (or others) to unlock on HDD based systems.
I guess I'm glad I have the DVD based system. I just d/l the 2011 DVD's from the internet and burn. For 2011 the discs are split E/W, so you install the disc for your geographic area. Insert disc, wait 5 minutes, restart and everything is there. Looking forward to 2012!

I did take it home already, and in fact was told I could NOT have a copy of the bulletin because it's "internal and only for dealers".

You raise some good points Ard, which may help get better results next time - hopefully sooner than later.

I'd assumed they would not release the TSB... even if you just got- in their printed document- "we cannot do it due to software issues", you will have a leg up.

Anyway, I am sure they will get this fixed eventually..but we need to keep pressure on them.

Finally, I think I can order the 2012 DVDs for $8 and will try and do that tomorrow- will confirm if it works.

PS FSC code should run 150 euros. Screw the US dealers.

Activation code I am hunting, prolly do it this week. Dealer wanted $290 for the code. I've seen different amounts on line, FSCmap is one of them.

Hahaha. I just had the same conversation with the dealer today. They were like what is this? Nav updates for $10. He was sure there was something wrong with his ordering computer !!

Fingers crossed they end up being the pack of 6 ;-)

Please...

BMW charges $200 for the copy-able DVDs....now that they implmeneted the 'FSC code' (which locks VIN to software) they have INCREASED the price to 400-500.

So you assertion that copying the DVD has driven your cost up is absolutely refuted by the fact that BMW is doubling the price with their copy protected version.

I haven't followed-up with my local BMW parts Tech, but I'd posted the response I'd received when I too offered to pay the $ to get map updates on my 2010 X5d last December in this thread: http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/sho...390&highlight=.

So, at the time, I was left with the impression that there was definitely a reason they couldn't order me the map updates, but I certainly didn't hear them say it was due to any sort of TSB.

However, in hindsight, I'd guess that it's looking more like there really could be an issue that needs to be resolved.

I'll have to give my parts guy or Service Advisor a call to get an update.

I ordered the latest Map DVD, just for the heck of it...we'll see what shows up. $10.21

If I DO get it, I will need the FSC code to install it. THAT is $350 at the dealer...I'll prolly buy it elsewhere.

As before (going back 2 years with my 2010) the dealership parts guy insisted 'there is no DVD for the newer cars'. I walked him through the whole concept, he shrugged and said "Well thats news to me". The clearly teach everyone it is a dealer only task...

No, but there are downloadable copies of the CCC and earlier DVDs. The quality of the rip, AND the burn, are critical to making working copies.

I did receive 6 DVDs: the 3 disc 2011 North American map and the 2012 North American Map.

I need to find time to order an FSC when I will be home for more that 24 hrs.... Crazy travel schedule now...

I have a 2012 X5 which I took posession on October 31st 2011 - my Nav system version is 112093.2.27 - can I just use the DVDs (Part 0199003728) for 2012 to update what I have?
Actually, I am also trying to figure out why my total unit does not give me the same functuionality as BMW shows on their "Owner manual Movies" - for instance, I do not have the on-line interactive manual option.
I plan to go to the dealer to ask why, but their service advisors are incompetent (probably by design) - when I asked them for software update steps - they had no information that the updated software existed and how to do it. I just downloaded the software and installed it myself (took some experimentation)

Get the discs, pop #1 in...I am willing to bet your car already has the FSC code. You may get the 2012 map for $10.

PS If you were local we could meet up and try it...you'll know in 30 seconds (as the the need for the FSC or not)

This thread is a bit confusing due to the mixed nature of the posts, but are you saying you paid $10 for the dvds and then nothing for the FSC code and your hd nav is now updated?

^^ I think chuckgr bought an FSC from the internet.

HOWEVER, people wit 2012 cars may already have a 2012 FSC loaded!! They should not buy the FSC, just buy the maps and see if they load. If you need an FSC the system will ask, but if the FSC was loaded during the build, the map will just load.
