What is the space next to the Idrive for? clearly is not a phone holder, anyone?

I am really confused by the space between the cup holder and the Idrive wheel is for? Clearly is not a phone holder, anyone have any ideas?

Also are there any accessories that can make that space usable (I.e. phone holder)?

My phone fits right in there. However I suspect it wasn't designed for phones so I doubt that is the correct answer.

+1 on that. Tolls are not as much of a pain anymore. Just one more delay in getting EZ pass

Yeah, I just throw pocket change in there. I do have the EZpass though. Saves so much time, especially in New England

I usually have about a dozen quarters in there, for two purposes. (1.) parking meters. (2.) flip them through the open sunroof when some jamoke is riding my bumper. Oops.

J/K. But yes, I have considered it.

My Samsung Omnia 7 mobile phone just fits in it. BMW's owners manual does state it's for a phone.

Where does it explain this? I can't find any reference to it in my 2007 Owners Manual.

To hold the key FOB when I valet park . . . I separate the key from the FOB and leave the FOB in this space. This way the remaining keys stay with me . . . usually attached to a belt loop via a belt loop hook.

Hate putting the key bunch in the slack pocket - feels very uncomfortable!

*IMO* better place for phone is the space on the door handle used to drag shut the door, or the cupholder if it is not being used.

Caution - for LHD cars, make sure key bunch is hung onto the belt loops on the right side of the trouser . . . otherwise keys will scratch the plastic on the B pillar as you get in and out of the car. Trim plastic on B pillar is pretty soft.

Note that the slot (and the shift lever, for that matter) was different on the pre-LCI models (2007, 2008, 20009) than on the post-LCI models (2010, 2011, 2012). The later slot is more useful for coins, less useful for a phone.

Blackberry fits in the slot perfectly. My phone and the remote control for the rear entertainment system fight for that spot.

I can't find anything that fits in the 2012 5.0i slot.
