Buying used X5 out of warranty

I used to have a 2001 X5 4.4i that I sold a couple of years ago when it had 110k miles on it. It was nothing but problems, went through 2 transmissions, a/c compressor, radiator, endless window regulators, massive oil leaks, etc. Anyway, I am looking at getting a used one and am curious if the newer ones are a little more reliable. I am getting a pretty good deal on a fully loaded 2007 X5 4.8 with 53k miles on it. I am scared it is going to give me just as large a headache as my previous one did. Just wondering if it is safe to purchase one of these out of warranty. Any input appreciated.

While I like my X5, I would never, ever buy a used BMW out of warranty. They simply are too unreliable and expensive to fix.

While I have 152k on my E39 M5, I did have a warranty to 100k...and used every penny of it.

Given the cost to repair these if you do not wrench, it isn't just 'major' issues that can hurt. As you know from personal experience, window regulators, ac ompressor, etc, can be $500-2000 per.

Buy one with a CPO or buy one with under 50k and add the BMW gold or platinum warranty

2007 was a first year of a new body, thus YMMV and quite a bit.
I'd prefer to put extra $K and get late 2008 or 2009.

At least the E70's don't have pixels. Ah, the memories......

Good call. I checked with my credit union and they have a great extended warranty plan.
