Will fake engine noise come to F30 like M5?

Did anyone else see this article in the NY Times yesterday about BMW using a recording of engine noise to create a throaty sound in the M5? Astonishing! One has to ask then, is the engine sound on the F30 authentic??

this is an m thing...

and its been used in other exotic cars before...

wonder if the i3 will have recordings in it. Maybe have selectable recordings from Ferrari to John-Deere

I actually always thought it would feel strange to drive an electric car without the hum of an engine.

If they were going to use it on the F30 it would likely be in the 328i as the inline 4 cylinder turbo probably has the least on paper ability to make enthusiasts sounds. In all the initial reviews (list of them here) the N20 in the 328i does indeed sound a little diesel like (reviewers words, not mine). So if they're using the technology it isn't working

They could also whatever system they have in the mini s that makes it sound throaty and raspy when you press the S button.

Of course, the BMW’s engine recording is really what you would hear if the car did not have extraordinary sound insulation.

Which begs the question: why not just ditch the insulation and save a couple of hundred pounds?

(The possibilities are endless though! Think upgrading a 318i to an aftermarket V12 with open pipes recording! Will Alpina get involved?)

I thought in read somewhere Lamborghini used it...i was wrong on that, tho i do think lotus was experimenting with it

BMW is the first to use it. Lambo won't use this system because they are NA with V8+ engines which provide a glorious tone to the exhaust but because BMW M5 has turbo's it acts like a silencer so I am guessing BMW used this amplification to provide more exhaust tone back into the system.

But why settle for just "a little Diesel like"? I want an F30 328i that sounds like an old Detroit Diesel 8V71 with a 13-speed manual transmission. Those engines made glorious sounds back in the 1970's. I think I want speakers both inside and outside of the car to broadcast those sounds to everyone outside.
