Battery Question

My car has had a few no-starts due to a flat battery; I'm not entirely sure of the cause but the battery is 5 years old, so assuming it fails a battery test when I get a tester, I'm looking for a replacement.

The subject has been beaten to death; I know the standard response is the duralast 49-dl, but I'm interested in something that may be able to handle more abuse. I make a lot of short trips with long sitting periods in between, and occasional long 2+hr highway trips.

I'm wondering if it's possible and worthwhile to install an AGM battery or if the E39 charging system won't support it. Any experiences?

I'd love to get a true OEM Varta but they're not available in north America.

I don't believe AGM batteries need any special charging routines.

Get the group 49 battery with the highest CCA rating you can find. That should hold up well.

I replaced my battery last month with DuraLast Gold H8 (H8-DLG). It's rated at 950 CCA. I had a 49-DL (850 CCA) for 6 years and it worked perfectly well.

I thought about the H8 AGM battery that AutoZone sells, but decided that the price difference and the question about the charging system made the H8-DLG a better choice.

Initial research seems to point in the direction edjack does. I was mostly curious because the newer cars with AGM stock have a fancy charging system. It appears that the biggest concern is that an AGM can accept a very high charge input which can and will burn out an alternator if the battery charge is allowed to drop significantly.

I have a lot of corrosion under my battery and in the spare tire well. It's going to cost a crapload to get it fixed; the PO didn't vent the battery properly, and the vent hose is missing for whatever reason, so i can't vent it if wanted to.
I am not interested in replacing a poor design when there is better technology available.

Anyone found a sealed/AGM battery that fits?

Yes, the AutoZone DuraLast H8-AGM will fit. It costs $155, but that is probably a good price for a AGM battery.

Yeah, looking around they're expensive. I've found a Braille Endurance that's group 49, a Odessy 1350, and another Odessy that may fit: http://www.odysseybatteries.com/battery/pc1700mjt.htm

All of which are expensive and probably unavailable in Canada due to NAFTA or some other excuse.

Dunno but there may be good information here:
- What battery (1) & what battery options (1)

Replacing the car's vent tube isn't that hard or difficult. One of the female e38 forum members did a DIY on it...you can see some of her pics below (Miss BimmerLV from the e38 forum). As you can see, the e38's vent tube is in the same location and the whole design and part nbrs are the same as the e39's:

All you need is approx $5 worth of parts...(#11, #12, & #13 in the diagram below)...you can get the BMW part nbrs and approx cost if you click the link to the diagram below and scroll down to the part nbr index. All Miss Bimmer LV did was pull out the grommet (#13) then pulled out the tube (#12)...and reveresed the procedure to reinstall:

I just put a Rayovac in my E38 from Batteries Plus. It was an EXACT replacement and really f'ing heavy. Made in the USA if that is important particuarlly driving a car made in Germany! The one for your car is the SLI49H8M if you are interested.
