What does this oil warning mean?

This may sound silly, but I can't figure out exactly what this warning indication is telling me. Seems to mean add 1 quart of oil, but on a car that is less than 9 months old and with under 7000 miles that seems crazy. Oil temp looks OK as well (I think). Anyone who can tell me exactly what this is telling me, I would appreciate it. Thanks..

From page 199 of my owners manual - Oil level at mimimun: add engine oil as soon as possible, but no more than 1 US quart / 1 liter.

Actually your oil sensor might have gone **** up. I was getting The same thing at 5500 miles this past week, they topped it off but a few days later it came up again. They took a closer look and found the sensor faulty.

Its telling you to add another quart-- but not so fast. I had a similar warning but only after I had been idling on a steep hill for several minutes. Once I had the car level, the indicator went back to normal (although it took what it seemed at least 5 minutes). I've read other posts where the sensor went bad (and you definitely don't want to add more oil in that case) or the oil level truly dropped. Just have the dealer take care of it under warranty.

Yeah. I found it a tad strange that I could burn off a quart of oil so quickly. Never has that issue with any other new car. Ended up adding a quart because I was too many miles from a dealer at the time and the light had already remained on for 24 hours and nearly 100 miles. Light went off after adding oil and will see if it comes back on. Still I plan to bring car into dealer this week just to make sure. Thanks for the helpful posts.

1 quart in 7000 miles is not bad. If you intend to keep the car the oil should be changed at least every 7500 miles anyway. If lease, just stop at dealer and have them add for you.

BMW eliminated dipsticks along with the spare tire in current models.

Dipsticks have been gone for a few years now!

Dipstick, what's that?

I got the same warning when my Z435is reached ~6000 miles. The dealer added 1qt of enigne oil, and told me that some cars with higher hp engine need 1qt every 6000 miles. I hardly believe this, but so far no warning light. I have to wait for another 6k miles to see if this is true. At the time they added the oil, they said that the warning light may stay on about 10 miles or so, before turning off byitself.
By the way, this was a normal service, and there was no charge. The oil is not sold at any other place, except at BMW delears.

Other places, Bavarian Autosport for example, do sell genuine BMW oil.

If you are spending a good bit of time above 4,000 RPM, then you can expect to use a quart of oil every 4-5k miles.

It makes sence. I drove it often at near 4000 rpm and stayed at 4000 rpm for long periods for the first 1200 miles. After the break-in period, I don't remember the rpm, but it exceeded 4000 rpm for driving at 120~140 mph in Germany. I think that the high speed driving might consume more oil.

Once back in the US (after 1700 miles in Europe), I hardky push it beyond 4000rpm. So, I hope that a low oil warning light will not show up again.
