There were no good Japanese cars until the Datsun 510, and by then he had enough money to buy more expensive European cars? I've got a Japanese car in my list (not in historical order, not comprehensive):

1948 Dodge pickup
1949 Plymouth
1943 Jeep (Ford)
1956 Plymouth
1957 Ford Wagon
1962 Galaxy 500
1964 Galaxy
1961 Falcon (really my first - Dad gave to me)
1977 Porsche 924
1977 BMW 320i (wife's)
1972 Plymouth Cricket (Hillman Avenger - wife's first car)
1977 BMW 530i (traded the Porsche in for this used car that really hooked me on BMW)
1987 Isuzu Trooper II
1991 BMW 525i (replaced 530i & 320i)
1991 Plymouth Grand Voyager AWD. Piece of crap but great family hauler.
1994 Acura NSX
1999 Dodge Grand Caravan AWD (not so crappy, still family, transmission still bad.)
1996 Toyota T100
2004 Toyota Highlander (wife, replaced Caravan)
2001 BMW 330xi (more practical than NSX)
2000 Porsche Boxster (25 year anniversary present to wife)
2010 BMW 335d
Oldest son (with job) drives a 2007 335i. Other son drives 1998 Camry.

If I had the time for a project I would love to pick up either a 1983-86 Scirocco (16v) or a 1983-84 GTI. Those were hella-fun to drive! The Corrados were fun as well but had their share of bugs.

Mein Auto: 335is
Past Rides:
1988 Dodge Ram Van (Transmission Died)
1999 Ford Explorer Sport (Engine Died)
2005 Audi A4 (Sold)
2011 Mercedes Benz GLK (Sold)
2011 Toyota FJ Cruiser TT Edition (Sold)
2012 Audi S4 (Sold)

Currently Driving:
2010 BMW 128i
2012 BMW 335is

- '88 Ram Van was the high school shaggin' waggon.
- Explorer sucked....typical American engineering
- Audi A4 got me hooked on German cars
- MB GLK was fantastic, but I got a bug to try some real off-roading
- FJ Cruiser was a blast. SOOO much fun....but then I missed the speed (and MPG were TERRIBLE)
- S4 delivered on none of its promises. Sure, it was "fast", elegant, and beautiful. However, it never FELT fast, it deadened all feedback from the road, the brakes squeled (apparently an issue with all Audi Sport Brakes and something they refuse to fix), the B&O sound system didn't sound half as nice as my HK system in the 335is (it had zero bass), and, most importantly, I enjoyed driving my 128i (that cost HALF as much as the S4) exponentially more than the S4. After about a month, I got to the point that I'd choose to leave the S4 at home more often than not in order to drive the 128i.

- 128i is a fantastic vehicle. There's enough power to feel, hear, and move you. It may not have the best specs in the world, but it certainly feels fast as #$%^!! It's lack of power (vs the 135i) means that it actually takes thought to drive quickly b/c you've got to have the right gear selected at the right time to maximize the torque - which is quite fun, I must say. The vehicle provides plenty of feedback from the road/brakes/etc without delivering me bruised and broken at my destination. It's like a go-cart. Probably the most "fun" car I've ever owned.
- 335is is magnificient. It delivers on all the promises the S4 failed to deliver upon. It provides all the positives from the 128i with a lot more speed! It is loud enough to be at home next to a C63 AMG. Despite its wonderful HK sound system, I often choose to drive with the music off just to listen to the fantastic exhaust notes. I'm typically a manual guy, but I got the 335is with the Auto Trans b/c it comes with the M3 DCT and produces the most fantastic downshift exhaust notes imagineable. Simply splendid. Only drawback I've found so far is that it does deliver you a bit bruised and broken at your destination....especially on the NoVA roads! Looking forward to taking it to Summit Point with the BMW CCA or a FATT event to see how it fares compared to the S4 on the track.

This reaffirms my idea of my getting the 135i next. I can't wait!

Thanks DSXMachina. I came really close to a 240Z once, but wound up with a 911 and never looked back. It's interesting to see that no one else here has owned 2002s (or maybe admits to it).

I agree. Had one as a loaner when my 335 was in for PPK install and really enjoyed it. It was nimble and easy to zip around in. Kinda reminded me of a 2002. I'd love to try the M.

My old whips...

Off the top of my head:

1976 Chevy Impala Coupe (sold)
1974 Lincoln Continental Town Coupe (junked)
1982 Chevy Cavalier Hatchback (sold)
1986 Chevy Cavalier Coupe (sold)
1987 Chevy S-10 Pickup (traded, slammed, huge system, GTA rims)
1988 Suzuki Samauri (sold, slammed, huge system)
1993 Ford Escort Wagon (first new car purchase)
1995 Honda Civic Ex (lease, turned in early, long story)
1988 Cadillac Brougham (sold, hyrdaulics, 4-pumps, 12 switches, two trophies)
1986 Olds Cutlass Supreme Coupe (sold, slammed, incognito pimp car)
1998 Kawasaki ZX-7R (sold, full race pipe, jet kit, ignition advance, etc.)
1991 Acura Integra LS Sedan (traded, slammed, 17" rims, strut braces, system)
2000 Ford Escape XLS (lease, tinted)
2003 Dodge Durango (lease)
2005 Dodge Neon (traded)
2011 BMW 328xi (lease, loaner, best deal ever)

There were a few AMC Concords, Renault LeCars, etc. mixed in the early days when I was living in Wisconsin with my dad who is an amateur used car dealer. But, I never truly owned those cars.

Driving my new(ish) 328xi, I feel like this is the first real car I've ever had. It's bliss.
