E82 / E88 1 Series (2008 - 2013)
BMWs throw back to the iconic 2002, with a renewed form and function. The smallest car in BMW's line up but still packs a punch. Available in coupe or convertible, powered by either an inline 6 in the 128 or the twin turbo rocket sled 135.

US 1 Series Question

One of the reasons I went ahead and bought mine was for some reason I thought the this was the last year (2012) in the US for the current configuration of the 1 series. Now I'm reading

that the present 1 series is going to continue to be sold in US for another 1/2 model years.

True or not ??????

Probably, yes. The coupe lagged the hatchback in Europe by... what... 3 years? And it just underwent an LCI refresh as well as pretty significant suspension changes (2011/2012). As a result I am pretty sure that yes, this current 1'er coupe will stick around for at least one or likely two model years.

Even if they were planning to switch to the new 2'er coupe (which is where BMW's nomenclature takes it) for 2013, I am sure we would have been hearing rumblings of that already and seeing at least test mules in heavy camo. We're not. Even to date there has been nothing to indicate that BMW are working on a new little Bimmer coupe as anything other than maybe a digital model. The 1'er coupe and vert are pretty much the newest of the last generation of BMW models and as such will most likely be the last to be changed.

Bear in mind the 1'er hatchback in Europe was on sale for a LONG time before the coupe came to the US. 2003 or 2004 maybe? It was 2007/2008 before the 1'er came to these shores at all.

Is there something wrong with owning a 1'er or some reason why you felt you had to buy it now?

I bought my 128 because I LOVE the BMW Stright 6 engine and for some reason I was thinking next year went to the 4 cylinder. Guess I was wrong. Very happy with my purchase, Always wanted one. Also I was just looking for any excuse to get one.

BMW does 7 year model cycles on average and the coupé and cabriolet was only introduced in late 2007 with the facelift in the March 2011 production. Hence you've got a few more years left.

The hatchback (3- and 5-Türer) were introduced back in 2004- well the 3-door came later, but still, it's been 7 years so the replacement came out back in late summer 2011.

BMW is still filling out the F20 5-Door range. M-Sport trim, 125i and 125d 5-door start March 2012. I haven't seen firm dates for a 3-door version of the new 1er hatch. Maybe this fall???

The coupe and the 'vert are going to be with us for a while longer. By 2013, they are going to start looking dated next to the F20 and F30. Maybe that is why BMW used a 6 year cycle for the Z3 and Z4. A Even on a 6-year cycle they have a while to go. I haven't seen any rumors of an early update.


The 125i would do well in the US. 218hp, 0-60 6.3 seconds and decent fuel economy. The 125d has the same 0-60 time and uses about the same amount of fuel as a standard MINI Cooper. In real road driving, the diesel is going to be faster. Both engines are 218HP, but the diesel has 1/3 more torque.
