Mein Auto: 2009 335i Xdrive Coupe
iDrive 2009/2010 difference?

I have a 2009 335i xDrive Coupe with idrive, stage 2 Dinin chip.
My GF took delivery of a 2010 335d sedan with idrive last week.

When I drove the diesel I noticed a lot of differences. It has great low end torque and very tight steering. The sound of the engine is like…well, lacking a better description, sounds a bit like a high quality sewing machine. During high RPM’s it does lack the punch of the chipped gas version, but not a dog at all.

A couple of differences in the nav screens. The graphics are noticeably sharper and clearer on the 2010 especially the letters themselves.

The Sirius satellite radio has several options that the 2009 does not have, like time shifting and traffic jump.

My question is: Will a software map update improve the graphics on the 2009? Will the extra features show up on Sirius with a software update?

Thanks

I have the latest software update (they reflashed my car last week). I do not have any of the new Sirius features.

Kudos for BMW for continuing to refine Idrive though.

I have the current-latest software. My 2009 335d was updated about a week ago. I was hoping for the new sirius features but I don't have them. Not sure if it's because this software isn't new enough to have them or if its because the new features require newer hardware. I suspect hardware because I think this software is supposed to match the software present on current MY 2010 builds.

I saw the new icons when I looked at a 2010 car but I didn't realize it has time shifting capability. Cool beans.

Time shifting sounds like it requires newer hardware. Maybe this is one of the reasons the sirius decoder was moved into the head unit. Without judicial legal precedent, and wasn't there already a test case that XM or Sirius lost?, I doubt the record labels would permit time shifting if there is a chance that the data could be sniffed as it moves across a human-accessible bus between physical components, of if the head unit could be spoofed in a way that tricks the decoder to stream decoded content to a foreign hard drive.

Sigh. The dealer just called to tell me they are going to reflash the car AGAIN (third time this year). I brought it in with a few more software related complaints, and they said they had a new version of the NAV software they they would install overnight.

Hi all,

How does one check the software version for the iDrive? I have a 2009 335i Conv.

Best,

I believe you have take it to your dealer and then can tell my scanning your key. Atleast that is how it is done for the non LCI models.

I don't know of any way to discover the version number without using special equipment that I do not own.

You can get the nav database version number by going to the Options menu in nav mode. I think that number is strictly for the Tele Atlas map databse.

What's the difference between an LCI and non-LCI model?

They are entirely different systems. The interface was completely revised with the 2009 refresh of the E9x line (which is known as LCI). Its an entirely different computer, which is hard drive based instead of DVD based.
