So did you ever get the new socket installed, if so what was the result?

I did get the new cigarette lighter socket (Part #61-34-6-977-682) installed and wonder of wonders: It works. Now for the rest of the story.

The service writer gave me the dog and pony show that BMW cigarette lighters are just that, cigarette lighters and they were not meant to power any other accessories, and 'you won't believe how many cars come in with blown fuses.......ad nauseam'. The mechanic came out and spoke with me as well, and he too spoke the same Party Line....it is a cigarette lighter and blah blah....but he was nice enough to say.."I changed the wording on the ticket so that it would be installed at no expense to you". I told them that I am not new to BMW, I have owned three over the years, and BMW engineers are second to none in what they do...they know all about iPhones and GPS units, and under no illusion that people will use cigarette lighter receptacles to power these accessories. I also told that that if the cigarette lighter did not work, I would have had one of their mechanics put in a plug which would work, after hours, of course. They all nodded their heads in agreement that could be done.

I think the previous owner just brutalized the lighter, and pushed some of the tabs out of position because now, I don't have to turn the fixture to get it to work, just plug it in and voila....it works.

Amazing.

I guess what I should do next is to try the Belkin charger which I used to use in the 740 to see if it, too, works. The one which my wife bought in China is kind of bulky and unattractive with a coiled wire. There being precious little space on the center console, I like to lay the iPhone on the seat and the coiled wire just barely allows this.

All in all, my visit to Desert BMW in Las Vegas was pleasant....a significant change from my experience several years ago when I was searching for a seven series. The folks there go out of their way to make things pleasant for customers.

I should have re-read this thread. Was on the road to Casper today, in my X3, my iPhone was getting low, so I plugged in my Belkin charger and . . . nothing. Didn't work. ****bird!

Prior to replacing the socket, the Belkin charger would 'sometimes' work, and 'sometimes' not. The GPS was really recalcitrant, but I finally got it to work as well, after a fashion. Those who drive the 3.0si know how harsh the ride can be, and the slightest bump would disconnect the GPS. I had had enough, and finally went to BMW.

I actually went out to a Z4 which was for sale in the lot and plugged my Belkin in, and although I got a message saying that (something) 'was not supported by this device', I pressed on because the Belkin did start charging the phone (which I knew it should have).

If you turn the Belkin from side to side, you will reach a 'happy spot' where it will work. If that doesn't work, change the socket out. Mine works flawlessly now.

Regards
jake

I may be a little remiss in my obligations...I show my seven series in my signature, only because I don't have the knowledge or the tools to create a new sig. I thought I would try to post a picture of my new baby...hopefully it will turn out okay....let's see.
