If it was me, and the car needed that much done to it, no telling what else you don't know about, I'd pass on it. I was reading some threads just yesterday about replacing the top and they were throwing numbers around over $3000 just for the parts. BMW service work is expensive if you haven't already realized that. Save your money and buy something else. I don't know the deal you are getting but this might be a low priced car but the repair costs are going to make it a high priced car, spend a bit more up front and buy something better, just my opinion, I could be wrong.

1) If you are planning on buying a car, spend the money for a CarFax report. It is what, $1?

2) Get a pre-purchase inspection done by someone who KNOWS the car and can give you repair estimates. Repair estimates are regional as labor rates are different around the country.

The key will cost you between 250 and 300. there are other ways to get and code your key but spare yourself the headache and just cough it up... and use it against the seller if the seller can't produce a second key.

The dealers will charge you a about 130-150 to do a pre-purchase inspection(PPI). Pay it with a smile. Make the seller fix what ever they find or use the PPI to haggle the price based on the $ amount it cost to fix the items uncovered in the PPI.

........ i'm currently fixing all kinds of little stuff and i swear the roundel (little BMW emblem) just started to peel and has lost half of the "BMW" and black filling over night. it's a $30 fix. it's fun! i love fix this stupid stuff... make me love the car and gives me a "i fixed it" kick... like a hobby.

Oil leaking? No spare key? Replace top? Replace top motor? And these are only the KNOWN problems... Unless they are giving you the car for free, it's just not worth the hassle. This is especially true if you are not doing any of the work yourself and/or don't like to work on cars. Use the repair money and buy a better car. There are TONS of very nice Z4's for sale. Garage kept. Low mileage. Many with extended warranties. Go to AutoTrader and research, research, research. Owning a Z4 is a blast, but not if its a money pit.

Sorry dude. I just noticed that you were in Honolulu. You definitely do not have as many choices as we don on the mainland. I would still pass on that vehicle unless its almost free.

Don't do it. Save your money and find a different vehicle. These guys all have very valid points. How many miles are on this Z?

Isn't the valve cover gasket part of the "inspection II" service?

Hey guys thanks for all your advice. I took it to my friends dad at a dealership and he had a certified mechanic look at it. The reports came out with those results above. I really don't mind the top situation but I am just worried about the gas leak. Car runs fine and mechanic said the engine checks out.
The car is going for 10k with 72000 miles. Been saving up for a long time for my first car. Are car fax reports
Only a dollar? Where can I get one?

No CARFAX reports are not a dollar. I think they are about $50 for four reports (in case you want to check more than one car). They will give you about 60 days to use them. Go online and good luck!

Sorry, typo, meant $15 or so for a single car report.

And unless the mechanic is experienced with BMWs, the look over is not worth much.

Key for my E46 M3 was $160. That was with BMW CCA discount.

Overall, I agree with others, pass on this one.

Based on what you mentioned along with this: http://classic.gmpsdealer.com/milwau...bt53493lu00731

....I'd offer no more than $7.5K (and that's taking into account you being in HI).

VCG is a $40-50 part and an hour of your time, or about $200+ at a mechanic.

Top, not sure what's all wrong, so it varies.

Key is about $150 in the states.
