Here is a good one for you ---
Let me start off by saying this was completely our fault (actually it was the drivers but since it was my wife I will share responsibility like a good boy).
We went shopping this past weekend. The wind was blowing like 40 mph and we were near an interstate so there was a lot of ambient noise that precluded our hearing the vehicle running when we parked. Somehow "we" must have hit the stop button three times and restarted the car when exiting the vehicle. I won't get into a rant about how I hate the button and cell phone sized key fob! Anyway, after being inside we were standing near the front windows of the establishment talking to the sales person and I notice our lights were on. I inquired why they were on and my wife started hitting her fob to turn them off unsuccessfully. She ventured on down to the car and when I arrived she said the car was running when she got there and she thought it was locked. In other words we walked off with the fob in our pocket and we think locked the vehicle with it running. As I said this was our fault but it also highlights another stupid example of the downside to a key fob and a start button. Question 1- anyone else ever pulled one like this? Come on, make me feel better! Question 2- In your opinion should this be able to occur. Should the vehicle alert you that you are getting out of fob distance if it is still running or should it shut itself off in your opinion. I am not dumping on the car but I was just totally taken aback that this could actually happen. Ya'll's thoughts. |

No it shouldn't shut itself off. If you were to look inside at the message display, you would have seen a large warning that the remote was not in the car. Also, why do you think you could turn off the headlights with the key fob??

100% operator error.

Exactly you must have pressed the button three times. I've never done that. I would suggest you disactivate the car by checking the rev counter if you find this a challenge.
Personally I find it very easy to track what I am doing. I press once to switch off the engine, then I get out of the car. Then looking through the window, I touch the door handle and I look for the lights on the dash to go out, as my cue that the car is both off and locked and I can walk away. It sounds complicated but it is actually really quick and easy. BTW the ambient noise must have been loud, because I find the F10 engine quite loud so it's not hard to tell the car is on normally.

It's actually very easy to accidentally re-start your car. You come to a stop, put the tranny into park with your foot on the brake, push the starter button once (foot still on the break) to turn off the car, push the starter button a second time to turn off the radio, and if your foot is till on the break the car re-starts. I've done it a few times.... never got out of the car and walked away though...
I guess it might be nice if the car would alert you with a horn honk if you walked a certain distance away, but honestly I don't know if that would help when we get in that auto-pilot mental mode.

About 3 years ago two coworkers and I went out to lunch at Ryan's (A buffet chain) and as we were walking out to the car the driver was searching for his keys. They were still in the unlocked, running Ford Taurus. It was a hot summer day, but the air was still on and the ride back was nice and cool. A physical key will not save you from operator error.
If I go to the trouble to turn off the radio, I notice the steering wheel moving to the exit position... |

As stealth said the car isn't that quiet for me not to notice it's on(definitely not now with my exhaust) but I always turn the car off the same way. Come to a stop and while pushing the brake I put the car in parking and put the ebrake on and push the off button then take my foot off the brake and push the button again which turns everything off and exit the car and push the door nob to lock the car.

Feel better. You are not the only one to have done this.

Also do not shut the car off with your foot on the brake

Question 2 - the key warning message on the IP is all you get with the F10. My Genesis does an annoying beep if I'm more than two feet from the car with the key in my pocket. |

I did this a couple of times. The engine is so quiet I couldn't hear it. I had gotten out of the car when my wife said "Aren't you going to shut the engine off?" Her hearing was always better than mine!

I left my car on in the garage with doors closed for few hours!! That was so stupid of me. I also probably rehit the start button few times without realizing I did not shut off the car. It was filled with fumes so I had to run to open all the garages and the car doors!

Best to just keep an eye on the black panel display. If it is off the car is off, if it is on, the car is on. That is my visual cue.

No, I wasn't that smart. I told her she was wrong as I had not left the engine on. I walked towards the front of the car and began to hear something. I jumped back in the car and hit the stop button again. I hate it when she is right, fortunately this is not a common occurrence.....

I always check the rpms before exiting the car. That has saved me many times when I thought the car was turned off

It is obvious that when you were not instructed or read the manual you will not make use of all the possibilities of the car.
Not shutting down properly being one of the most easily made mismanagement faults. There are simply a whole lot of gizmo's on the F10. I like to know how they work. So I RTFM. |

This is often diagnosed as a loose nut behind the wheel. I've done the triple button push myself, but did not exit the car. The F10 is fraught with unnecessary complexities. I'm afraid my lease will be up before I master the audio system.

Anyone know how far the car drive/travel without the key? I sometimes start the car to warm it up and bring the key into the house. I park on the stret in front of my house and wondered if someone could drive it away.
To the OP, I have mistakenly left the car running.
